I have been to Bangkok several times over the years. You are best getting a meter taxi from the airport. Theres a stand outside the airport use one of them. You are best using them rather than flagging one down from the road. My wife is thai and i go to Thailand alone regular and they are tourist safe

Bus there is quite doable; it takes a bit of time being stuck in traffic on Sukhumvit Road, but the same would go for a taxi. If your luggage is light, you could opt to get out of the bus / taxi at Om Nut skytrain station, and take that to Thong Lor (if you go to HI Sukhumvit) or to Asoke (if you go to HI Bangkok Centre Sukhumvit 25; I can recommend this one for the location; it's right at the crossing of skytrain (Asoke) with metro (Sukhumvit), and so makes for a very convenient base), which would save you some 15-30 minutes, depending on how bad traffic is.
Note for HI Bangkok Centre Sukhumvit 25, that if you take the airport bus here, my driver at least wasn't aware of the sois being half a dozen numbers off between the even and uneven side, and so wanted to drive on all the way to soi 14 (opposite soi 19), rather than stopping at soi 18 (opposite soi 25) as I'd asked for. (Maybe I shouldn't have tried to be smart, but just asked for soi 25.)

I have looked up the HI Bangkok Centre and I think I might go for that one instead. I am only staying one night before meeting a group in the evening the next day, so will only have 24 hours. Do you think Sukumvit Road is a good option or do you reckon I should head for the Khaosan road area instead?

I'm not too familiar with sukhumvit or Ratchadaphisek. But Khaosan is a great area for the nightlife. Very busy loads of Tourists/Backpackers. Its a good Crack. Bars are abit more expensive there though,

I am arriving in Bangkok airport on 2nd Nov from London mid afternoon and will be heading to HI Sukhumvit - I haven't booked it yet, but that's where I'm thinking of staying. Does anyone have any advice on whether I am best to get a metered taxi, or bus? I am 24, female and will be on my own. Is anyone else arriving around 3pm who would like to share a taxi to a nearbye hostel?

A meter taxi will cost around 350 baht from the airport. This is a ride right to your hotel front door. Meter taxi sign up desks are on the first floor out at the curb. Have a good address for your hotel not just a name. Taxi desk podium has picture of taxi on it and words "Public Taxi." Desk clerk will tell the driver where to go and give you a receipt that identifies the taxi and a place to contact in case of problems. You are responsible for 1 or 2 tolls during ride, total of 70 baht together. Driver may skip one toll to avoid traffic. You pay the meter fare plus a 50 baht surcharge at the hotel. No surcharge for rides back to the airport by taxi. HAVE SMALL BILLS AND EVEN SOME COINS TO PAY DRIVER. Money changers (banks) at airport available 24 hours a day.
The Airport Express Bus has 2 sign up kiosks are also on first floor, one desk inside (near Magic Food Court, cheapest place to eat at in airport) and a 2nd kiosk at curb area. Price is 150 baht. Bus could take over an hour, taxi half the time and door to door! No Airport Bus after midnight.
Another new option is to use the new Airport Rail Link. RAIL LINK located 2 levels below first floor, elevators and people mover belts available. Rail link right now only 15 baht (City Line) to the Pratunam area. From that area by meter taxi to Sukhumvit Road area will cost less than 100 baht when paying meter fare only! (Meter starts at 35 baht, check it. driver agrees to use meter BEFORE you get in!) Rail link also connects to Skytrain at PhayaThai. Maybe 30 baht plus the 15 baht (City Line) to get to nearest Skytrain stop on Sukhumvit. NO SKYTRAIN in Khaosan Road area. Skytrain & rail link stops running at midnight right now.
