As the question says - I have only 6/7 days between flying in and out of Hanoi. Do you reckon I'd have enough time to see Hanoi, Halong Bay and go to Hoi An without spending the whole time tired and travelling?
You probably have enough time, but for a more enjoyable and rewarding trip, I would cut out either HB or Hoi An. Hanoi City is a fascinating destination in itself, and you will not want to rush.
I would agree to cut either Halong Bay or Hoi An.
Halong Bay's tour is either 2 or 3 days and you may want to be in Hanoi for 2 full days.
Hanoi to Hoi An by bus or train is about 4-5 hours. It's worth to stay 1-2 days in Hoi An in my personal opinion as I found it to be a charming city.

i think for 6 or 7 days in Vietnam, you can do like that:
1st day: relax in Hanoi
2nd day: Hanoi city tour
2nd day : Sapa 3 nights 2 days (sleep at hotel or homestay)
3rd-4th day: sapa
4th night: come back from sapa to hanoi
5th morning: back from sapa, go to halong bay 2 days 1 night (sleep on the boat)
6th day: back from halong bay. overnight at hotel in hanoi

I think you must drop Hoi An if you use ground transport. Hue is an overnight bus or train ride from HAN. Figure 11-12 hours, not 4-5 as stated in post #3. Then another 4 hours to Hoi An. You could fly to DaNang, then over to Hoi An, but I don't think this is a realistic option either.
HaNoi has 2-3 days worth of sightseeing, a couple for SaPa, 2 more for HaLong Bay and you are out of time. I suggest you read some of the on HaLong Bay. Many feel like they were herded like cattle during the entire time. I would only go for 1 day if the weather is not OK. I was there in a light rain and 1 day was plenty. Not much fun paddling around in the rain. Read up on the tour before deciding how many days for HaLong Bay.

i also suggest you that you should visit Halong Bay, it is very beautiful place, and worth to see. For short time like this, if you want to go to Hoi An, when you come back from halong bay,you can take bus to Hue. It takes you about 12hours on bus, then you take public bus to Hoi an
