As North Cyprus is so diverse it is a location waiting to be discovered. Northern Cyprus holidays are tailored really for families and couples or mature singles. You wont find the 18-30’s crowd here, but you will find the a perfect spot to relax, unwind and take in the culture of the Mediterranean.
Funny you mention it now. Colleague of mine was there and will be back at work tomorrow. Looking forward to hear his stories. Seems that it would be my choice if I ever want to go to Cyprus. At least the southern coastal area is not what I am attracted to
I went to Cyprus (both north and south) last month. Can't say I was too taken with north Cyprus, it's very much stuck in the 70's - bad roads, poor signage, tacky architecture, cheap souvenirs in the shops. I also found the presence of army, flags painted onto mountains and frequent "no photography" signs disturbing, not to mention the sheer number of buildings that looked like they've not had so much as a coat of paint since the Turkish invasion. The hotel complexes may be lovely, but in the towns and villages too many areas showed obvious signs of neglect for my liking. All the archaeological sites we visited were expensive and poorly maintained, quite dirty too - plastic bottles, broken mirrors and even a rusty supermarket trolley inside the Bellapais Abbey site!
I wasn't too taken with the southern coast area either, but at least every area we visited in the Republic of Cyprus was well cared for, and all the archaeological sites were beautifully maintained and excellent value for money. The beaches on the east coast were superb and the Troodos mountain villages a real pleasure. The only 18-30 crowds we saw were in Ayia Napa - very easy to avoid if that's not your scene. That's my 2p anyway.
My mum stays near Polis up in the north west. I can't say I am a massive fan of the place but I can't put my finger on why. There are plenty nice places to stay and it is relaxing if that is what you are after. The restaurants are very samey for me and quite expensive.
Troodos mountain range is beautiful. Have camped up there and done some walking and it too is very peaceful.
