Both my partner and I are looking at moving to the USA, preferably New York or Boston but not essential on location. I have been doing some research and applied for numerous internships in hospitality as these also cover childcare. However, am currently finding it very unsuccessful and the only other alternative is a live in au-pair. This is impractical as I would be moving to USA with my partner.
I have just graduated from university with a BA (Hons) degree in Early Childhood Studies (with Practitioner status) and in the 3 year course gained experience at a number of placements including special educational schools and nurseries. Prior to university I spent 6 months in a nursery working as registered Ofsted assistant. Despite the fact I have a degree, noone seems interested in hiring me without 2 - 5 years experience in anything! I can't get the experience if I cannot get hired!
So I was wondering if anyone had any tips/advice or any information they can give to really help me, as I am struggling to find any source of employment, be it here in the UK or in my desired location of USA!!!
This is one terrible time to be looking for any work in this country unless you have extraordinary skills that cannot be matched in the local labor market. The USA is hurting bad, and many people with far more education than you are also pounding the pavement. Have you considered Canada?
My own son, who also just graduated from university here in the US with a business degree is still unemployed--despite having numerous internships, and high grades;--and this even though we live essentially in the booming Silicon Valley job region.
His problem in getting work is the same as yours--everyone wants someone who already has 2 to 5 years of work experience. I suggest you stay in the UK and get those 2 years--and then consider relocating. Either that or try Canada for two years and then relocate.

Thanks for your advice. Obviously times are hard everywhere! But we do want to get out of the UK as soon as possible, will just have to see what happens and possibly look into Canada!

Sadly I think the au pair thing is your best bet if you want something assured. However, once you get here and have some references there are agencies who help find nannies - which is a day job, in places like NY and such. And they love English/Irish/Australian nannies as they do command good salaries. Admittedly good is a very relative term since living in those cities tends to be very expensive.
