My photos when uploaded look duller than they actually are. Any ideas why? Is there anything I can do to adjust how they look to better match how they are in my own files?
This will be due to embedded color profiles. Most browsers don't even pay any attention to color profiles (only Safari and Firefox do to my knowledge, and so they'd be the only ones to show photos the same as they do when you're viewing them with image editing software on your computer, while all other browsers would always show your photos the way you're seeing them), but we appear to be discarding color profile information when resizing photos, so that even Firefox and Safari don't benefit from them, which I think classifies as a bug on our side; I don't know if it's going to be easily possible to fix things, though.
If you're good at working with an image editor, you can work around this by converting your photos from their current Adobe RGB color profile to the standard sRGB color profile and uploading them again like that; colors should appear brighter than they do now in the browser, if less so than on your computer. Or you can tell your camera to take photos straight in the sRGB color profile from now on. (In the shooting menu (2nd one from the top), select color space, and then sRGB.)
There's a big benefit to continuing to have photos in the Adobe RGB colorspace, though; as you've noticed, they just look a whole lot better - so the ideal solution would be for us to retain this information.
Sam, Peter: compare http://photos.travellerspoint.com/323589/Host_home.jpg with the original version of that; the blues really make a huge difference.

Hmm yeah, that is quite a difference. Lillypilly, did you use the bulk uploader or the single file uploader?
It's the resized version that loses a bit of saturation. Depending on which uploader you used, the resizing is handled differently.
Never mind that last question. I just tested uploading the file myself. It happens in both uploaders, but is just slightly worse in the bulk uploader. Compare here:
But in either case, the color profile is being stripped. I guess to save space. I'm really not sure there's a whole lot we can do about that to be honest, but we'll have a look into it.
By the way, another thing you might try - in Photoshop (and probably other image editors), you can view the "Proof Colours" of your file. If you tick that and set your Proof Setup to "Monitor RGB" you will see exactly the same desaturating effect that happens when you upload your files. This can help you at least know what it will look like once it's uploaded and in the browser.
