If the Spanish customs guy entered information into computer about your overstaying your visa I think next time you get into Spain this information will come up. Technically you supposed to pay fine for overstaying visa and that's it, the matter will be resolved, but it should have happened when you were leaving the country.
Solution 1: Just get a boat to Algecerias from Tangier and find out.
Solution 2: Take a cheap plane to Portugal or France or Germany and take a train to Spain as there are no border checks, with some occasional stops by police if you travel by bus.
Then go to your Embassy and ask them exactly where you can find out whether you're in some list by their government, should be some immigration office or something and I suggest you defenitelly to go there and make sure if your name is anywhere on the list
If you are on some sort of the list, so find out exactly what list that is, but removing yourself from there with proof of tickets you had is a matter of hours i think. Spain has enormous problem with illegal immigrants, but barely some illegal immigrant from USA, so your story will be believed. And if you search on google you'll get phone number of that office...
