Travel to USA with criminal record

I am just about to apply for a visa to the USA as I have a criminal record from 19 years ago.

Do a quick search here on TP. Top right of this page, type 'us travel criminal record' in the 'search' option.. You will see dozens of entries that have dealt with this issue. Click on several and see what members have said. Good Luck.

apparently because of the record I must apply for a visa, they require me to submit a record and fingerprints from the australian federal police.

The US has no way to access your record unless you tell them. Your choice...
