Help! Looking for cheap tours in South America.

Hi,

Was it maybe?

No, I think the site was only for Central and South America. It was cheaper then GAP Adventures. Thanks though.

The cheapest by FAR is doing it yourself - especially for a destination like South America that has a very defined Gringo Trail and great tourist infrastructure with excellent and easily accessible transport/accommodation/food/etc.

Why does doing it yourself not interest you?

Cheers,
Terry

I'm a girl and I'll probably be going alone. I'd rather be safe and go on a tour. Is it a lot cheaper doing it yourself? Have you done it before??

mm143, as already stated it is MUCH cheaper to do it yourself and as already stated most of South America has excellent backpacker infrastructure so solo travel is NOT unique.

There are many great guide books, forums, blogs, etc. that cover much of South America very, very well. Because the backpacker infrastructure is so good and because it's so easy to research countless travellers have done South America on their own - the hostels all over the entire continent are full of solo independent travellers.

That said, if you're inexperienced or lack confidence to travel solo then yes, it can be done on a guided tour same as almost everywhere in the world.

Cheers,
Terry

I have backpacked alone before but since I saw that amazing tour for cheap, I thought I would try that route. But thanks for your input Terry.

I don't know what your definition of cheap is, but you generally get what you pay for in this world and I doubt very much there's a well run major tour anywhere in South America that comes remotely close to matching in price a trip that's well researched by an experienced backpacker to anywhere on the usual Gringo Trail.

Cheers,
Terry

Gap tours is insanely expensive and so is Intrepid, We have planned all of ours for a total cost of 3500 including flight for 6 weeks, and that is over budgeting for pirvate hostel rooms & tours.

For Peru, a great local company is Pheonix Tours, Contact Franco

Also, when travelling in developing countries, its always nice to give back to the local economies rather than booking with some north american travel cooperation.

To mm143,

Don't suppose you're planning on heading to Ecuador end of July 2011??
