Looking for advice on where to go first!

Hi,

Ideally you want to avoid the rainy season which is South America is December to March. New Zealand has reverse seasons to the UK, but like the UK you can have heavy rain in their summer, or sunshine. SE Asia rainy season ends sometime in October and then it gets increasingly hotter till the end of April.

Buy a RTW air ticket with overland portions. I would start in South America and do that October to November. Then to NZ for November or December to January, then a flight to Thailand and check out the travel agents on Khao San Road in Bangkok and they can sort out your travel in other destinations in the region, and visas.

I would miss Fiji out unless you particularly want to go there as it will add substantially to your costs, which you will need to keep down to make your money last. One of your biggest expenses will be flights, and these are best booked as early as possible (as in start looking immediately you have firm plans) to get the best deals.

Asia is by far the cheapest part of your journey so maybe spend most of your time there? Accommodation can be bought very cheap, especially by the month in Thailand, but I would make sure I had air conditioning.

Pop into Boots or another pharmacy and they'll tell you what injections, malaria tablets you will need (cities are often OK, but going into "the jungle" will often mean mosquitoes). Also take out world wide insurance. It is not that expensive and may save taking out a mortgage to pay hospital bills or an air ambulance if worse comes to worse. You must tell an insurance company if you plan to do anything dangerous, like riding the rapids, certain sports, etc.

Do be careful of petty theft as in pick pocketing, notably in Peru and Bangkok. Increasingly nowadays, thieves hang about where there are plenty of tourists.

As to what Hunza Holidays said, India is OK but do not visit the other countries unless you are a muslim as there is still a lot of unrest in them and westerners are not always welcome at the present time.

Take care with a digital camera. The problem is not so much getting them stolen as losing all your precious holiday photos on them. It happens so often. The card in your camera acts like a computer hard drive, and can pick up a virus from connecting to a computer in an internet cafe as you upload photos to a website or whatever. Personally I would buy a few cards, they are not that expensive, and not upload anything till I got back home on my own computer.

Thanks for the advice Cyberia, especially the info on Bali, didn't realise it would be pricey. Seems like there is so much info out there to go through before we can get started!
