i'm off travelling Oz, NZ and south east asia soon.
I love my iPhone... the apps (even just the free ones) you can get can save you time, energy and angst.
For example -
Maps... I use this even in my home town!
Download city guides
Train timetables
Pedometers
And of course games
Internet
Email
And the usual
Call/Be called in an emergency
Text messages - plus free ones like Viber or What's App.
The costs can run away with you if you use the mobile internet, but if you only use it where you have free wifi or in an emergency, then I think it ends up paying for itself.
You say anyway that it's a handmedown - if it's not the latest one anyway, personally I think you may as well take it!!

Definitely take it! There is tons of advantages as Abby has pointed out.
On my last couple of trips I was amazed at how many backpackers have smart phones, laptops or netbooks with them.
Thanks for the advice, I think you’re right there are a lot of advantages to having one, I will probably end up taking it as I will need to be emailing home a lot so would rather just do it on a phone than paying to go to a internet café every time!
