HOSTELS

i plan to primarily live in hostels whilst i travel central europe. Can anyone give me an idea of what most are like?
Are people usually willing to socialise with others? I ask this because if push comes to shove i will travelling alone and would love to meet some people along the way who i can tag along with, would this be a likely scenario?

The hostels in Europe are generally very nice (have a look through the for some examples). And for socializing, you can't really beat hostels in general either in my opinion!! I know in Australia it was VERY common to end up hooking up with other travellers and maybe travelling segments together. I'd expect that to be pretty similar in Europe over the summer months especially (though it can get quite full those months, so there is probably more booking ahead in big cities in Europe than in Australia).

thanks a lot for the advice! hopefully i will meet some like minded travellers on my adventures

People who stay in hostels are usually ready to socialize; it's part of the experience. If you do find some traveling companions, though, keep in mind that a room at a backpacking/budget hotel for two or three will often be cheaper than a hostel stay for that many people. Backpacking hotels are usually really fun and quirky, too.

The hostels are getting better and better in Europe, I find generally the crappier ones are in the Western European cities like Paris, even London, and you pay alot more for them.

Use a site like hostelbookers.com or hostelworld.com to research and book your hostels.

Traveller rate the hostels according to safety, cleanliness, atmosphere, location etc. If you are after a really social place look at their atmosphere rating, usually the 'party' hostels have bars attached etc. Its quite useful to find a place you will like.

Most hostels are pretty social, if you are a social person anyway you will always find people to talk to especially over the busy months when there are always new faces coming and going.

Or you could just use , seeing as we include ALL the hostels from both Hostelworld and Hostelbookers in one place (also meaning your booking confirmations all end up in one place)!

I didn't mention this in my original post, but Travellerspoint also has a feature, which means you can interact with other travellers staying at your hostel in advance... could be useful!?

hi Dionaea,

Every time I travelled alone are live in the International Youth Hostel. It's safe and cheap.English is the international comunication language. Moreover you can meet person like you from all over the world. Every night you eat ,chat together.Sometimes there is a party .Can you image that ? different guys from all corners of the world. Cool~
hope it helps have a nice trip~

Hostels in big cities are great for meeting people. Especially ones with a lounge/bar/pub type area. It really depends what type of person you are-- if you want to meet people, you will!

I stayed in hostels in some smaller towns though when I was travelling along (ie. Cork, Ireland) and didn't meet people but only because it wasn't summer and the hostels were relatively empty.

My best experience was my hostel in Dublin. I met great friends there that I still keep in touch with.

Also, if you are picky about accommodations, I would go with higher rated hostels as I have stayed in some pretty shitty ones and regretted it. Some people just care about the price though which is fine.
