Vietnam in Aug,Sept or October

Hi, Off to Vietnam but very worried about the RAIN!
We hope to see the whole of the country and have no real time limit, but thought about 3-4 weeks.
When would be the best time to visit between Aug and end of October 31, 2012.
And should we start in the North or South?

Annemarie,
Looking at the , you will need your rain gear! Every month from June to Oct. has significant rain totals in both HCM & HAN. Just playing the odds, I would go as late in Oct. as you can. Good luck.

We were there in Oct 2011 for 10 days during the Rainy Season which may not be as bad as you think. I'd say about 70% of the time we were rain free but our 3 days in Hoi An were full of rain. We actually started in the North (Hanoi), and made our war down the coast to Hoi An, followed by Ho Chi Minh City. There is a train called the Reunification Express that runs from Hanoi all the way to Ho Chi Minh City - we took it half way down to Da Nang (about 16 hours). It was an experience. We grabbed the soft bed seats in the sleeping compartment (most expensive but still very affordable), and had a comfortable ride. I kept a blog of our experience and you can reference it here if you'd like: http://abjourney.com/category/vietnam/. I hope you figure out your trip and more importantly have a great time!

I think late in October would be best if you can swing it. I've been there then, and had few problems - my train was delayed by flooding, but no big deal (Central Coast). If you concentrate on the North (which has more to see/do anyway) you'll do better. I'm protecting myself this year by going first to Thailand and Laos, and don't arrive in Hanoi until Nov 30th.

Weather is part of the mystery of SE Asia - impossible to avoid something in the way of rain, heat, power outages, overcrowding, etc.

Hi, Thanks guys for your replies.
Have decided to make the trip in November.
Loved your blog lexussin. What a trip you had!

Hey Daawgon just seen your reply about arriving in Vietnam 30th of Nov...

Sounds like your travelling the same route at pretty much the same time.
I'm arriving in BKK early/mid Sept and heading for N.Thailand then making my way up to Laos for Oct and then Vietnam, Cambodia back to Thailand.

What are your plans?

Thanks, Ryan.

Hi Abailey!
This is some info about rainy season in North & South of Vietnam for you.
The tropical south
The difference in precipitation between the two seasons (dry from November to May and rainy from June to October) is more obvious than elsewhere in Vietnam. However, the rain in the wet season is often limited to heavy showers at the end of the afternoon, and the weather is warm throughout the year. Annual rainfall in the south is approximately 65 inches and temperatures remain relatively constant –between 30 °C and 35 °C during the day and from 20 °C to 25 °C at night – throughout the year.
The wet season
The rainy season is from June to September - the wettest months are July and August. In the past, violent tropical storms were a regular occurrence – indeed, some tourist guide books still warn against them. In reality, there has been a marked climate change in recent years – the last serious storm occurred in 1999. Spectacular thunderstorms are common, but are not much of a problem if you avoid the deluge that comes with them.
Have a good vacation in Vietnam!!!!
