Going solo, Australia december 2012

Hey newbie here and needing some advice!

Hey Scotslass1,

I traveled solo around the east coast of Australia a few years ago. If you're going around New Years Eve you definitely want to be in Sydney for that. I'm not sure if it's in your budget but when I went I rented a car and drove down the coast to a park called Wilson's Promontory. It was amazing if you're into seeing national parks etc. There are incredible hiking trails and unreal scenery. Melbourne was a great city also with plenty to see and do. I'm not sure if you're going more for sightseeing, partying or something else but a lot of partiers seem to like Cairns. I did not like it being alone but if you want to see the Great Barrier Reef that's where you need to go. Hope this helps you a little.

Hey,

Welcome! There are quite a few of us going out to Sydney in December, also going solo. None of us are using any of those ultimate oz things. I don'tknow much about those packages, But in my opinion it's been pretty straight forward to plan everything myself. Most of us are planning to go out for a year. You should consider just taking the plunge, if u have the finances.

Is there anything you want to know?

Elle xo

Hey Guys,

My name is Carla, I'm 23 and I'm from Ireland/Dublin. I am going travelling alone in feb 2013 my flights and all are booked! I leave here the 13th of feb and go on to Thailand for 3 weeks and then I arrive in Sydney on the 10th of March.

I'm quite nervous about going but I' happy in myself that I have decided to take the plunge and go for it

I'd love to hear about all your plans and in my opinion you should go for it you will only regret it in years to come and if you do go and it's not for you just remember all paths lead home

Carla x

hey elle i just noticed ur from southampton. when u off travelling? me and a friend from southampton r going in december and we r both excited yet a lil nervous as u do. be cool to chat to new peeps about plans and stuff x

Scotslass,

I'm also 23 and I left Glasgow - from Feb of this year I have been in Sydney, I can safely say I will be gutted when it comes to going back home!
Personally, I wouldn't bother with any of the package stuff - its a rip off compared to what you'd pay doing everything solo.

As for meeting people, as long as your willing to be a bit out-going and talk to people in hostels you will be fine!
In the hostel I found a lot of people were going it alone, and with everyone having a drink before going out it kinda ends up as one big group. Sure you'll be fine, but its a pretty normal worry.
Some of it depends on what type of person you are, I had previouslly travelled a bit of Asia before coming here and I am okay cutting about seeing the sights on my own. During the day in the hostel I was happy to go out with the camera and see all the stuff I wanted to see, sometimes alone sometimes others came with me - obviously arriving in a hostel alone will mean a lot of the people you meet have already done the sightseeing part.

I stayed for a while at Kings Cross, and met some great people in the hostel - one of the guys I'm now in a Shared Flat with in the city (Kings Cross is good, but staying in a hostel with folk going out every single night and your getting up for work at 6am is not a good combo...especially when I was rolling in steamin at 4am!!).

Am travelling over at the start of march myself to do a years working and travelling, already got my visa just need too book my flights got the money ready and waiting just can't decide where to start.. Sme people say cairns others say Brisbane, could you give me a wee bit of advise if you don't mind since your literally there and doing it at the moment am totally clueless ha.

Thanks

Clare

Clare,

Afraid I can't help much on that matter, cause I've only really been in Sydney!!
My plan was to start either here or Melbourne, opted for Sydney first and just haven't got round to leaving.

Probably goiney stay here for quite a bit now, keep working and partying at the weekends - and then use my last two / three months of the visa to travel the rest of Aus.
Kind of hoping to go home via South East Asia as well, money dependant.

Hi Graeme,

You coming home after your first year or you going too do farm work for 3 months and get your second year approved?

What's oz life like then you having a good time? So excited too come over but the thought if ever having too come home upsets me lok.

Clare

At the moment, I'll be heading home after the year - as this trip has literally been life changing!

Came over with the hope of getting a job and getting sponsored (Quantity Surveyor is on the skills shortage list). Kind of realising that I really, really hate the work - the Aussies have managed to make a boring job in the UK more boring!!

Been helping a Japanese girl in my flat who does volunteer work with kids coming from Japan who don't speak too much English. Twice a week I help out, and to be honest its great fun! Long story short, I'm goiney go home and study Primary teaching - if I get on the course. Need to go home for an interview if you apply, so was planning on staying in a better paid job - go home for the interview, and then leave straight away again for a few months in Asia!

Its amazing, I would honestly love to stay forever - or at least come back and stay once I get a job I like.
I've found a great group of mates, which most defo helps though. Still miss my mates from back home, and miss the football like hell! Thankfully Sydney has a few Rangers Supporters clubs, so not missed a game.

If you plan on staying in Sydney long, I wouldn't leave it too long from when you arrive till you start looking for work - I went two months on a kind of "holiday mode" and soon realised I'd spent a fortune....I couldn't quite believe how expensive it is over here!
