Round the world, alone. Need advise on Budget, Destination

Hi,
So I've decided January 2014 I'm off. The travel bug has got me good!
A few years ago I went to Europe with a friend and did a contiki tour, which was a great starter to get my confidence up in travel. In fact since then travel is all I can think about!
So, I'm going to take a leap and head off on my own for 6 months. Ideally I'd like to go to South America, Europe, and Asia with some stop over's in North America along the way.
Now, prepare yourself for a rather confused and jumbled blerb, (sorry)
I was thinking about getting an around the world ticket with oneworld alliance. Does anyone think this could be a BIG no? I've had a quick look and with my planned route and depending on how many non-flight legs I take I've worked it out to cost about $4800 to $5600 (NZD) I'll need to have a much better look into this but ive got time however, my Flight break up would be something along these lines:

When you're in Peru do you realize there's no road through the Darien Gap to reach Central America? To reach Guatemala and Costa Rica you have to fly or arrange something by sea. It's not cheap. Also, going to Argentina is at the other end of South America so with your short time frame you're looking at flights too.

Consider instead Colombia (in my opinion the best country in South America right now) and perhaps Ecuador or Bolivia instead.

Have fun.

Cheers,
Terry

I'm from the UK and I can give you some ideas as to prices here. Most of Europe is around the same, with the UK being maybe slightly more expensive than most other countries in Western Europe. Let me know what sort of things you need to know, and I'll do my best to answer.

While you are in Thailand, you could travel to Cambodia and visit Angkor Wat. Or, if you have another 2 weeks, take the train down to Malaysia and Singapore, which are very different from Thailand, and well worth visiting. Kuala Lumpur is a nice mix of Indian, Chinese and Malay/Muslim culture, where you can sample many different types of food, and visit Petronas Towers, formerly the world's tallest buildings. I'd also recommend the nearby Batu Caves, which contain a Hindu temple and are home to a family of monkeys which come down from the mountain to steal food from the temple. (I found the monkeys more entertaining than the temple ceremonies!)

Terry,
THANKS! I wasn't aware of that when I posted it. And I've had a bit of a fiddle with my intended route and I've decided to fly from San Jose down to Rio and then fly/bus my way up to Peru.
Now just to research bus companies and the best routes to take.

Thanks BeciL!
I've visited the UK and Europe in the past, so I've got an ok grasps on things there...so far. But any questions I have I'll be sure to send your way!!

Madpoet, ahhhhhh everything you've said I'm going to try and fit into my trip! If the weather allows it. My trip will have me in South East Asia in August/September so it might be a bit wet from what I've read, but I'm hoping it will all be ok

Hi,

i'm also hoping to go travelling in 2014 for a few months and have looked at thailand and lima too. Roughly i'm think about £1000 a month just to be on the safe side. the lucky thing with it being a year and a half away is that you've got time to safe and figure it out. i've also seen loads of great sites that help with the planning.
hope that helps. i'de be intrested in any useful info u may get, or if u need anything when u get to london

For the European places you may find it cheaper to use London as a hub and use cheap flights to hit the Greek islands, Croatia, etc, rather than doing point-to-point.

Croatia - split and Dubrovnik are interesting but if you're planning on the islands then maybe you'll find more of the same but cheaper in south east Asia.

Depending what you've seen already if I were zipping through Europe I'd like to see Rome, Venice, Budapest, Florence, krakow, and any of the Scandinavian capitals.

Japan is going to be a real budget killer - and I speak as someone who's bought a round of drinks in Norway! I always suggest Taipei as a cheaper alternative that no-one thinks of. (But I know it's not the same!)

Sounds a good trip :-)

Thailand/ Southeast Asia: I highly recommend doing Angkor Wat in Siem Reap, Cambodia. It is a bit of a struggle/money to get from Bangkok to Siem Reap ($150 USD flight abouts) but highly worth the trip. I agree with the post above saying if you have a few days check out Singapore, but I wouldn't say Kuala Lumpur is a must.

Also, make sure to check out the Thai Islands while you are there, Koh Phi Phi and the other famous ones are worth a few vacation days on a beach.
