I just booked a trip and the agent said she isn't really making any money off this. The price I paid seemed to be the average cost for the vacation as it was listed in the newspaper.
Do you know the average commision they make on flights?
Maybe they make more money other type of sales. Just curious.
It depends on the airline and destination. Many years ago, when I worked in the business, domestic fares got a flat rate of $25 per booking then the airlines started trying to cut out these commisions and eventualy quit paying the agents directly for the most part. So some of them, the agents took to charging the customer directly for a booking as does the big online agents like Orbits, Cheaptickets and all the rest. Last time I checked the international carriers were still paying commisions but it varied from airline to airline, some were quite good 5 to 7% of the fare. They also get a piece of cruise and hotel bookings so they are not working for peanuts. The agents also get free upgrades to first or business class on a space available basis and a lot of favorable perks when they travel so don't feel sorry for your agent. While it is true that it is not as good as it once was, it is still a great profession for anyone who likes to travel, as it should be.
Hi - I work for a well known travel agency in the UK and I can categorically say that individual consultants make pretty much nothing on flights! To give you an idea on a £500 flight with a preferred supplier I would get less than 20p in my pocket! To make any money in the industry you need to sell lots of accomodation, tours, insurance etc because without it the basic wage is pittance!
As a travel agent, I can tell you.... The commission depends on the company and product.
