Hi, can anyone give me some advice please before my brain freezes up researching 'communications technology' for my forthcoming trip. It was so much easier when i last did the 'year off' twenty years ago! No internet, mobile phones....!

If you are not on a budget then the Acer 6291 would be your best choice. If you are and you can really get away with not palying DVD's then get the Acer Aspire One which is about 20 percent cheaper than the Asus Eee 900. The Asus X80NE is a full size laptop so unless you want to carry one around then go for it.

You may be able to get a portable dvd accessory for it, though I haven't looked into it. I've been using my MacBook (purchased 2 years ago) and it's survived so far! You may be able to find one cheap since it's an older model.

I'm really 'in' to computing generally, i hand built my desktop, watercooled it, modded the case etc. I bought a Samsung Q45 about a month ago and im probably happier with this than i was my desktop. You can get it for around £550. Would recommend it to anyone, even my own grandfather... which i did! (Needless to say he bought one)

I'd say get the eee 901 model instead, it costs a bit more, but it's way better. It has like 8 hours battery life and the new atom processor, which is a huge upgrade from the intel celeron on the 900
I just bought an msi wind to take with me travelling for a year.
How do people feel about carrying these netbooks round with them, at only 1kg i figure that
it's worth a bit of hassle, however i am concerned about losing it or having it nicked, but i guess i will just have to be extra careful and make sure its insured.
I have an Eee 900 (which i'm answering this on) and it's fine. I deliberately decided against the Windows & HDD versions in preference to a SDD Hard drive. It's smaller, but there are no moving parts so it should take allot more bashing about than a traditional HDD.
Ask yourself what you are wanting to use it for. If it's basic photo storage, emails, blogs, skype, web etc, then it's fine. If you want to do more serious stuff, then you might need something else. The lack of a disk drive saves weight, and i was happy with that trade off. I also have a very small external HDD (Smaller than a pack of cigarettes) which wasn't cheap, but gives me extra storage and i can also take it to shops to copy photos onto CD with, for example. Yes it's a traditional HDD, but if it dies, it doesn't take the computer with it. It also means i can put them separately in my bag which gives me some extra security as i half the chance of loosing everything.
The lack of DVD player mans i have to pick and choose/rip things first to HDD if i wish, but i decided that was OK, as a DVD driv and DVDs add bulk and weight. The battery life is not great, but otherwise it's fine. And it charges pretty well from my solar charger anyway, so no problem.
I also have a 12" Samsung Q35 which is excellent, but i decided it was too big/heavy/expensive/hi-tech to bring on this trip, plus a 12" work Macbook (ditto)
They may be expensive, but they are worth it:
Check out Sony's Vaio TT notebooks.
- They weigh less than 3 pounds.
- They have a built-in Dual Layer DVD writer.
- They can double as a DVD/media player without launching Windows.
The TTs are the newest models, so you may want to check for older models, like the VGN-TXN25N, which is what I'm using to write this post.
OR
You can leave the laptop at home, use PC rooms when you need to and read books to keep you entertained.

I just bought a 901 off Amazon for less than $430 USD. A 16GB SD card was less than $20. I've had the machine for two weeks and really like it. I specifically bought it for a RTW trip next year. The keyboard can be a challenge, a 10" computer would give you a better keyboard, but I' happy with the 901 for the price / weight / features.
