Volunteer Work Abroad

Can anyone recomend a company to arrange the above with. I found a few eg Globalteer, Projectsabroad and Real Gap but I am struggling to find reviews about them. The company that appealled to me the most was Real Gap but I have managed to find reviews for them and they do not seem to get any good feed back!

You don't mention which country you're from (nor does your profile), but going by those organisations you're probably from the UK(?)

If so, (formerly GAP) and have volunteer abroad opportunities.

I volunteered with Projects Abroad and it's amazin. D n country staff r very supportive and staying with a host family adds to the uniqueness of the experience. They have range of different placements to do in various destinations and dates to start placements are very flexible.

Try reading their volunteers' stories (that's what I did before I signed up with them). Am sure it'll help u decide...

what sort of placement do you want to do abroad, btw?

Hi, thanks for the response. I was looking at teaching in Peru but I am flexible and just want to experience something completely different. What did you do? Did you go alone? When did you go?

Sorry for all the questions but its good to chat to someone who has done it.

Hi "splidge",

I have a friend from California who volunteered for a job in Peru early this year, helping the victims and with the reconstruction after the earthquake.

She came under the group Burners without Boarders (BWB)... they are still calling for volunteers on that, you can find more info at: http://www.burnerswithoutborders.org/bwb-goes-to-peru-we-need-your-support

I live in Lima at the moment, if you have any question just let me know!

Cheers,

Caro

you can check out couchsurfing.com they often have volunteer projects going on!

Hi there, no worries. I actually did volunteering in Sri Lanka a year or so ago. I did teaching there in a school then work at the tsunami camp as well in the afternoon. Yes I went alone, which was worrying me at first. But the staff were very supportive and met fellow volunteers while I was in the country.

When I applied, I spoke to one of the staffs in the UK office and they gave me an email contact of one of the ex-volunteers who volunteered in Sri Lanka, which was really good and reassuring to know.

USE PROJECT'S ABROAD

Projects Abroad has an excellent site and looks to be a great organisation. Has anyone worked on any of the conservation projects?

I'm really interested in the African Savannah one in South Africa.

If you contact Projects Abroad office they'll definitely give you names of ex-volunteers who did the same placement you're interested in - that's what they did when I inquired. Give it a try, there's no harm in phoning them. It's very reassuring once you speak to someone who did the placement already.

Hope this helps.
x
