Hey Liz,
If you just go to any streets near Khao San Road it will already be alot quiter. I stayed in a really great cheap place called Khao San Place. It was closer towards the river and on the road parrallel to it. It is about 5-10 mins walk from Khao San. It is run by an older Thai lady and it is very quiet and nicely run - plus great food. Rooms start from 120Baht for a single room.

You could stay on Sukhumvit or the Siam area and be able to take advantage of the Skytrain rapid transit system to take you to many other parts of Bangkok. No Skytrain in the Khao San Road area! The Skytrain connects you with the subway and the Ekamai bus station too!
Of course everything depends on your budget.
Taxi's are cheap in Bangkok, only pay the meter price. If the taxi driver says no - get another taxi - there are thousands! Between cheap taxi cabs, cheap busses, the Skytrain and subway you can reach anywhere real easy.

Agree with the above. Stay in Sukhumvit or Silom. The accessiblity levels have increased greatly with the sky train. Makes it much easier to travel anywhere.
Near Khao San there is Rambuttri where you can find the Merry V its about 180 baht for twin bed room.
Its about 5 min. of walk from khao san

I would recommed staying at The Rambuttri Village Inn.

it has a pool and is close to the Khao san road but not too close!
Mango Lagoon over on Rambutri is really nice as is Erawan Guesthouse, but both are a step up from the 200 baht rooms, I've taken guests from 30-65 there and they've been happy.
I had been in Thailand in November 2005 and I want to go at the end of this year to Laos and Cambodia, because I like so much the Northest.
I stayed in Bangkok in Khao sand ROad, in the guesthouse New Siam II. this is a good accomodation, clean, not noise, cheap, with swimming pool, and a 2 mintuos from Khao San.
Then, we visit Chang Mai, and I stayed in the Galare Guest House.Just in the Center, near the river, with all service and goo accomodation.
Finally, we were visited Phuket, and I stayed in the Vighit resort...this is far from the best beaches, but we book a motorbike and !No Problem!!jejeejje

Everybody's got good advice it seems like, but the thing about Bangkok is there's a huge variety of prices and districts. I agree that you definitely want to be near the sky train (BTS) or subway (MRT), but apart from that it really depends on what you're in Bangkok for.
If you want to party like mad then Sukhumvit or Silom for sure, if you want something quiet and more Thai than tourist, check out the suburbs. Khao San, Sukhumvit, and Silom tend to be pricier than the less touristy areas. Until I can find an apartment I'm staying at KT Guesthouse (ktguesthouse.com) in the Huay Kwang neighbourhood, which is near the MRT (Huay Kwang station), the location is inexpensive and there are only about 10% tourists. There are shops, street restaurants, a few bars, a daily market, and a temple nearby. It's slower paced than the city centre, but still easy access to the more commercial spots. If that sounds like your bag then check it out, 500-600 baht/night with air conditioning, hot water, balcony, terrace, pool, attractive grounds. There are also fancier hotels in the area.
But again, pick a district that reflects your wants and needs. For example, everyone told me to stay on Sukhumvit, which I did, but was hugely disappointed by the massive prostitution and how expensive it was.
