Hi guys,
There is no overnight train from Hanoi to Vientiane so your only options on that route are to take the bus or fly. As you say, it's a long journey by bus, and is apparently very prone to breakdowns and delays etc. I flew with Vietnam Airlines for around $120. There are other crossings elsewhere in Vietnam I think, but I'm not sure of the details of these.
Thanks for reply, I will try and do some more homework, I reckon another border maybe in order. Seriously don't fancy that bus trip!! haha
My geography is getting better by the way, it's so exciting even at this early stage of doing the planning

Just, a quick word of advice from someone that attempted to do the saaame border crossing following a hellishly long bus ride on insane bumpy roads (including 2 breakdowns, one of which lasted a splendid 4 hours where the AC shut off, the windows didn't open, and we weren't allowed off the bus, and the driver stopped unexpectedly to get in a fight with a guy on the side of the road... after paying extra for the VIP bus!) before reaching a border that is not only corrupt but barely functional (you don't even want to hear the stories. It was that bad.), I would HIGHLY HIGHLY recommend just paying a little extra to fly into Vientienne or Luang Prabang from Ha Noi. I have a fantastic sense of humor and adventure when it comes to difficult travels, but this is a major stress for alot of backpackers I spoke to.. probably one of the most difficult, if not THE most difficult, overland border crossing in all of SE Asia.
Please, save your sanity and fly.
