whos got a trip planned with Intrepid travel?

hey, was just wondering if any has a trip booked with Intrepid travel? just want general information about them please

I've just come back from a tour in Indonesia with Intrepid. What kind of info are you looking for about them?

whats the average amount of people on the trips?

do the guides have good knowledge of the area?

they strict?

dont really just dont know what to expect

thanks

My trip was a 'basix' style tour, and the maximum number of people is 12, but other tour styles may vary (Intrepid have 'comfort' and 'original' tours too). There were 10 people on my tour; a friend of mine did the same tour a few months ago and there were only 5 in his group.

I wasn't satisfied with our guide at all - I can't tell if he had any knowledge of the area as he didn't really make any effort to tell us anything. I think I was just unlucky though as other people seem to have much more positive experience of Intrepid guides. On the basix tours all the excursions are optional and there is no obligation to participate in any of them. Again, this might vary depending on tour style.

As far as tour companies go I think they're pretty similar to many of the other big ones and I think the range of tours they offer is fantastic. I would travel with them again for this reason, as I don't think all the guides can be as bad as the one we had!

Which tour/s are you thinking of doing?

me and my friend are doing the Malaysia Basix trip were doing it the 16th jan

cant wait

Sounds like fun - I'd be interested to know how you get on and what you think of the guide.

ill let you know

I've done two trips with Intrepid Travel - around Northern Thailand and Borneo.

The first trip round Northern Thailand was pretty good but overall though, I could have saved a bit of cash if I'd just booked up a couple of train tickets and a couple of tours once I arrived in Thailand. It wasn't really necessary to see Thailand on a pre-booked tour cos it's such an easy country to get around. All the main tourist locations have tour offices and stuff.

The second trip I did was around Borneo and that was excellent. All the activities on the Borneo tour would have been a lot more time consuming to organise and fit in if I'd booked them myself, so overall I'd say the Borneo trip was definitely worth doing for all the hassle it saved.

One other point is that a couple of people on the Northern Thailand trip were a bit unhappy that the guide took us on a lot of extra side trips which added to the cost. The guide told us about the extras as if that was the set plan for everyone but I personally didn't do all the extras and just spent a lot of the time just chilling out. I think maybe though some of the younger people on the trip felt obliged to do everything that the guide suggested because she didn't really ask what people wanted to do - she just said 'Okay, today we do this so I need x Baht from everyone.' But like I say, I had a couple of lazy days to myself so if you don't want to do any extras then they weren't compulsory.

But both trips were well organised and like I say, the Borneo trip took a lot of the hassle out of the organisational side of travelling and was an excellent trip.
