Hi all,
Maybe I'm too precise and we may be using completely different definitions, but I believe there's a BIG difference between "meeting people" and "making friends". But, when you travel on your own in the States it is indeed extremely easy to strike up conversations with people you meet. Just about anywhere. Most of the time it'll lead to nothing more than a pleasant conversation. And sometimes - and you never know when and with whom - it can actually lead to real long-lasting friendship. Case in point: was on a flight from San Diego to Houston MANY years ago. Struck up a conversation with the couple next to me. Turned out they were moving to San Diego, just like we were. Our families became friends. Ten years later when we moved away from San Diego they bought our house!
Plan to stay in hostels as its where you are most likely to meet other travelers. And dont be overly trusting of strangers as backpack traveling in the USA can be a bit more dangerous than it would be in Asia or Australia..

I think hostels are a great way to meet people and its how I meet a lot of people thats for sure and as far as safty. I would say use common sence no matter what country one travels in,

I have taken 2 solo trips to the USA. I love the country and the people, and theres always other travellers to talk to. Talk to locals too though - they're the ones who're likely to invite you home for a meal, or will take you sightseeing around their city. It's a very easy country to travel around, you'll have a great time
