Im looking at seeing Africa in the late fall/winter of 2010/2011 and was wondering from people who have been thier is that a good time to travel? Also ive looked at several companies who take people through Africa. Any recommendations of good backpacking/caravaning/tour companies?
Hi Adri
It depends where in Africa you are visiting and what you want to do whilst you are there. I am starting a tour in July around East/Southern Africa - I chose July because the focus of our trip is game viewing and it is much easier to see animals in the winter as it is dry and there is less dense bush, also with less availability of water it is easier to find waterholes that attract a lot of game. The nights and early mornings can be extremely cold but once the sun starts to shine it's not too bad and you can usually get away with a t-shirt and shorts around midday.
Oasis overland and footprint adventures are two companies that I would reccomend checking out for overlanding.
Thank you for that. I am from Alaska so I hesitate to visit Africa in the summer and I will defently check out the sites you mentioned

But which part do you intend to visit Adri?
Summer in Northern Africa is May to September while in the south it's November to March. In both cases temperatures can rise to over 40C (that's like well over 100F).
In the East, temperatures don't fluctuate that much as it's close to the equator. It's more a matter of elevation and/or rainy season which is more affecting climate. Short rains from October to early December, short/hot season from half December to February, long rain from March to May and long dry warm season from June to September in kenya/Tanzania.
Cheers
Michael.
Your destination will definitely decide what weather etc you can expect at different times of the year.
Thank you so much everyone for your help,
Adri
Hello Adri,
I have been to Afrika in 4 different season and I must say that every season has it's own beauty... the rain season when everything is green, the dry season which makes the deserts beautiful.... And of course it depends where u want to go and what u want to see... the migration of the animals in november.. (in tanzania) or the flooded Okavangodelta in December... the summer in south Africa...
Make urself a plan in what u really want to see...
Greetings from Cape Town
Elisa
