RTW in 90 days....can I do it?! South America, Asia and Oz

Hi there!
I'm Lucy from London and 20 years old. I went to OZ for a month in March 2008 and I picked up the travel bug there
I am now planning a round the world trip, and looking to go 1st March to 10th June-ish...
My plan of action if I can fit it all in would be:

Lima(Inca Trail 6 days)

That's simply not enough time. Even if you fly straight on to Cuzco from Lima, you need at least three days of altitude acclimatization there before getting started on the Inca Trail (which takes four days). And really, flying straight to Cuzco is a bad idea, as it's too high, and you effectively won't be able to do anything for your first two days there. An intermediate stop (as far as height is concerned) like Arequipa for a day or two is highly recommended, with then two days in Cuzco, and then the inca trail. That's eight days already. (Lima itself is safe to skip, though; you won't miss anything.)

In general, I don't see any rest days during your trip. For a trip of this length, you need time off from travelling every so often to just sit back and do nothing, without feeling like you're wasting precious time which should be spent seeing things. I'd cut at least one country from your plans, and spread out those days along the rest of your trip. This is simply too ambitious.

(Also, for India, how are you going to cover the distances between these places? Count on losing a complete day each time to travel (and for some of those distances, two days might be a better estimate), so you need 22 days there, rather than 16.)

Hi -

That's going to be a busy 90 days but yes it's possible. My first RTW in 2004 was for 5 weeks (all i could get off work). We were in/out of hotels every 2-3 days and racked up 96hrs in the air over the 5 weeks. There were no 'rest days' and I was absolutely 'fu**ed' when we got home. But, the experience was amazing and I wouldn't change a thing.

By only spending a few days in a country, people will say that you wont have experienced the true country. That's not strictly true. What you will get is a good 'taster' of the place and that may be all you actually want from the place.

Basically, if you can get more time, you shoud. If not, go for it and see how you get on.

Good Luck.

Very tight schedule, I havn´t been to india but from what I hear you´ll be sick for another 4/5 days on top of the travel time the previous poster refferred to, your Australia plan is sound plenty of time to do that, South east Asia is where I can offer some advice.

I´d fly to Bagkok, bus, train or flight to chiang Mai, book ur trek(3 day), fly to Luang Prabang Laos, dont hang around here nothin to see, get a bus to Vang Vieng, Laos, what can I say mine and several others favourite spot in South East asia, itys where u do the tubing down the river in a rubber tube, savage spot, 4-5 days here, geta bus to Vientiene(u can even kayak from Vang Vieng, interesting alternative), absolutely nothin to see in Vientiene itself just go here to get a flight to Hanoi, Vietnam, from here head straight for Halong Bay and booka 3 day boat trip around the bay to Sappa Island, this was another highlight of my trip, back to Hanoi and either get a train down stopping at maybe Hoi An, and Nah Trang which is good onto Hoh Chi Minh city, highlight here the chu chu tunnels from the war....from Hoh Chi Minh fly to Phuket, Thailand...dont waste time in Phuket its a hole, head for Phi Phi Island, best place in Thailand, day trip to beach where the beach was filmed, from here go to Krabi and cross to Surat Thanai where u can get a boat to Koh Phangan for a full moon party(u should plan ur dates around one of these, well worth it), go a few days before and afterwards get a boat to Koh Tao, great place also, forget about Koh Samui its another seedy kip......other tips for Thailand dont pre book accomodation especially for full moon just rock up and only stay on haad Rin beach for full moon, rest of the places are too far away....there is a an airport in Koh Samui and Surat Thani if ur runnin out of time......

My advice would be to pick one of the three regions and spend your whole time there. You will spend at least 30 of the 90 days getting to and from places and then if there is a problem anywhere you could lose a lot of time. I completely agree with Sander, and add that you chances of really enjoying and experiencing any place is pretty much gone when you rush through like that.

Whatever you do decide, good luck!

Thanks so much to all of you for your advice - I am now going to OZ for 5 weeks then SE Asia for 10 weeks.

Very excited!!

xx

Sounds good Lulu! Granted, I am a total lover of South America, I hope that one day you will be able to go there for an extended period of time. My wife and I will be checking out Aus, NZ, and SE Asia very very soon (2 weeks till we leave for Fiji, couldn't come quick enough). We are doing about the same time in each place, 1 month in Australia, and 2 months in SE Asia, so hopefully thats enough time!
