hi guys,
I'd recommend staying in one of the central suburbs such as Ponsonby, Parnell or Mt Eden, rather than the city, as they tend to be much more pleasant areas to base yourself in. The city centre can be reached easily on public transport from those suburbs. is in a fantastic location near to Ponsonby Road which is full of restaurants, bars and shops; I haven't stayed there myself but I used to live round the corner from it.
From the airport you can get the which is the cheapest option at $16/$23 one way/return (cheaper if you have backpacker id) or the which is slightly more expensive. A taxi is the most expensive option and is around $70 to the city and central suburbs.
Further to above advice, I stayed at Bamber House hostel in Mt Eden - it was nice, clean and characterful. Not a busy neighourhood though.
I have stayed at the Fat Camel Hostel which is right in the middle of things. Its a popular and busy place, a little in need of a spruce up but otherwise fine. If its still the same, they do free light meals each night of your stay. If you're looking for somewhere quieter, I've also stayed at the Kiwi International on Queen Street. This place doesn;t seem to have quite the patronage of the Fat Camel, but is clean and in a good location
thanks guys,
hey_monkee, it seems the Kiwi International is a bit expensive at 40NZ per night. i would prefer a cheaper alternative...
thanks to bex76, i think this posonby backpackers seem more enticing than the rest...
Fat Camel Hostel seems like Picadilly Backpackers in London. i dont really like hostels which are dirty....
i am still searching for a good backpackers/hostel place in Auckland, staying in Auckland for 2 weeks to get my bank and IRD sorted out....
Hey mate,
i stayed 15 month in new zealand and about 4 weeks in Auckland.
I lived in the pentlands hostel at Mt. Eden.
Nice hostel, very friendly staff (Manager Vinnie is a really nice guy and helps wherever he can), clean and quiet (no traffic, because its in a no exit road)
In the hostel live longterm stayer aswell as newbies. It's a good mixture.
You will really quick get in contact with the people there. It's a familiar athmosphere and i enjoyed it a lot there.
From there you can walk to auckland downtown in 30min or take a bus for 1,60.
Supermarket, postoffice, banks are a 5min walk.
If you stay longer in NZ i recommend to buy a BBH-Pass (45Dollar incl 20Dollar phonecard) which gives you a discount in all BBH Hostels in NZ (3Dollar per night).
Hope it helps.
Enjoy your stay in NZ.
Sascha
thanks kiwisascha,
i have already booked a 1 week stay at Posonby, it will cost me 150NZ dollars for the whole week...
i shall definitely look into the BBH card thingy....
thanks guys.....
Posonby Backpackers is a nice clean hostel.... i like it....
A possible solution for a cheaper alternative would be to use a search aggregator -snip- in order to book at the most affordable price for your stay. For Auckland you can check -snip-
Hope it helps!
