There's 2 avenues you could try:
- WHV can be extended up to 12 months total. If this is still possible, this would probably be easiest
- I can't find anywhere whether Danish WHV is a D-type (long-term national) visa or a C+D-(long-term + short-term Schengen) type visa. If the former is the case, your bf may still be entitled to a stay in the Schengen area not exceeding 90 days in 180, provided he hasn't used this allowance in the past 180 days. In the latter case, the C-part expires simultaneously with the D-part

I think that extending your Danish WHV is quite difficult. It says on the website that it is inextensible, but on the application form it says to tick whether you're applying for your first WHV or an extension. So who knows. But we will consider it

When a friend of mine was laidoff (with a regular work permit), she checked with the Danish immigration office, that she is allowed 30 days in the country after the permit was expired so she can wrap things up (i.e moving and closing accounts, etc). I'd suggest that you check with the immigration office - maybe 30 days is all you need. :-) good luck.

I called the Danish immigration office and they had no idea what a Category C, D or C+D was, or where the WHV fitted into. However, they were adamant that my boyfriend can't return to Denmark for another 3 months after his visa expires. However, they couldn't tell me why that is.
So I called the Swedish immigration office who assured me that my boyfriend is free to enter Sweden for up to 3 months after his Danish WHV expires. Even though he had just spent 12 months in a Schengen country.
If the latter is the case, then surely he can travel back to Denmark under his invisible Schengen visa??

That's clear enough. Even though the Danish authorities seem quite poorly informed of their own rules, I'd take their 'no' as a 'no'. It's puzzling why you get a seemingly opposite answer from the Swedes, though. Well, maybe he could stay there for a month, it's by all means closer than Australia.
It's a well known "secret" that the Swedish authorities are much more lenient and liberal than the Danish authorities. Still, I find it interesting if you're able to "get around" by simply going to Sweden since there's no immigration check between Denmark and Sweden. How would anyone know that he left Denmark and arrived in Sweden? Or vice versa?
I agree that it's somewhat a big risk to take to "pretend" being in Sweden and then staying in DK on an expired WHV. I don't think the Danish immigration service can be talked into giving him as much as one extra hour. I've heard some pretty bad stories.
My fiancée is American and I didn't know about the 90 days in 6 months rule, but something somehow dawned on me before it was too late so we saved it. I spoke to the Danish immigration service at that time and they were VERY strict, wouldn't give him extra days even though my mom was terminally ill and he wanted to stay with me. Well, in our case we were lucky and everything fell into place. Another thing you should think about if you choose the Swedish solution, what about getting to London to catch his Perth-flight?? He'll probably be found out when he's leaving DK for England, unless he plans to leave from Stockholm or somewhere else in Sweden.
