Have Kindle will travel

I just bought a Kindle 2 with global 3G wireless and am planning an adventure travel trip later in the year. I just wanted to hear from anyone who has been travelling with a Kindle and what their experience was eg downloading books, impressions from locals, durability etc

Would you be connecting through 3G to download the ebooks, or is there wifi built in? If you end up using roaming through 3G, you might want to check the price in advance. I've heard many a story of people travelling abroad and ending up with 3000 $ phone bills because they don't realize how expensive it is to download from the internet, whilst roaming. I always avoid this when I'm travelling, by only connecting to the internet where there is a wifi connection.

Hi Sam I Am,

Actually it has 3g wireless built in for free to download books so no extra charges.

But when you are abroad typically you'd have to pay the foreign providers for using their network, wouldn't you? I have to admit to not knowing the details of Kindle specifically, but for all mobiles on 3G this is the definitely the case, regardless if you have unlimited 'free' minutes at home.

No it is actually free globally. Amazon absorb the cost as you can only use it to buy their books anyway.

Well, that is very cool indeed!

I've heard no such stories ever-sounds like a load of bunk.

I have heard such stories, in fact I've heard of people running up even bigger amounts than that because of roaming charges abroad that they're not aware of. A friend of mine works for one of the big mobile companies here in NZ and from what he says it's a fairly regular occurrence.

Happened to a friend of mine. He was on unlimited data plan and got carried away in using it while on an overseas business trip. Ended up with a charge of a few thousand ringgit, and was subsequently summoned by the HR Department to explain about it. Guess what, he claimed not knowing anything about the usage and charges!!!

There were quite a few that were published on major outlets right after the iphone came out. Recently a German racked up a 46 000 EUR bill for downloading a TV program abroad.... I've also had friends rack up hefty bills of around 2500. But you're free to believe it isn't and try downloading all your emails, visit websites, watch youtube vids and check things on a nice map app over your mobile on a one month trip abroad. Roaming costs are typically insanely high, (, these days often the size of just one email with a pic attached) so it doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out that this happens regularly if one isn't careful.

Luckily to limit the damage that can be done!
