Driving Grand Canyon to San Diego, where to stay along the w

Hayley,
You need to get an early start from Vegas. Figure 5 hours to the GC. I would drive part of on the way to the Canyon. The section from Kingman to Seligman is well preserved. Full day at the GC and then head for San Diego when it gets dark. It will take roughly 8 hours GC to SD. I would stop in , 2.5 hours from the GC. That is a long day and you can start for SD the next day. Good luck with your planning.

I actually agree with vegasmike's suggestion, but thought I should mention a few other possibilities.

One possibility is to drop south on US 89 to Sedona--a beautiful spot just south of Flagstaff that is a tourist attraction of its own with its beautiful red canyons, another choice is to drive farther south and go to Blythe near the Colorado River. This is a good choice during the summer months. And, for a final choice, consider driving much farther the first day and go all the way to Palm Springs, which is a tourist attraction similar to Las Vegas, but without the gambling and a bit less "glitz". It has plenty of pools and hotels, though.

Personally, while Palm Springs is probably the nicest choice, it really is too far to go all in one day. Sedona, however, would be much more scenic than Kingman and you could still get to San Diego on the following day.

Enjoy.

Thanks for your advice.

I was looking at Google maps and noticed that Lake Havasu City is about half way, what would that place be like? What is it like compared to Kingman?

Thanks
Hayley

Hayley,
Lake Havasu is much nicer than Kingman. Lake, Colorado River, London Bridge. However, it is another hour down the road. If you leave the GC at dark, you won't be getting there until about 10:00pm. That is one very long day. I think I would stay in Kingman, get a decent night's rest, drive to Havasu for breakfast. There is about 2 hours worth of sightseeing, then on the SD. No advantage to getting to Havasu in the dark. Good luck with your planning.

Thanks VegasMike6. That sounds like a great plan
