Planning a Europe trip in April-May, any suggestions?

Hi

You should stop by Sofia, on Bulgaria. It's an incredible city!
If you need a place to stay, try -snip-

Well if you've got time, do Vienna then you can leap on the high speed boat down the Danube and visit Bratislava too. Just watch out for The Castle, oh my goodness that hill - I passed a couple of teenagers conked out a quarter of the way up.

I havent made any concrete plans yet but I plan on seeing most of the big cities/capitals

Plan on around 5 days for most of the big cities or skip them. Also include some of the smaller destinations. Don't overlook a place just because it isn't the capital. Tip: if you plan to visit more than one place in a certain country you should plan on 10-20 days for this country.

I'm planning on travelling through Europe on the train in April/May

Does this mean that you have 8 weeks? Or less? What is more, is your wallet up to it? For 8 weeks travelling all over Europe you need approx. 3500-4000 EUR (3200-3600 pounds) - and that is if you stay in hostels and eat food from the supermarket.

Barcelona, Paris, Berlin, Brussels, Prague, Krakow, Budapest, Rome, Venice and Athens to name a few if I can squeeze them all in.

Tips:

1) Dresden is halfway between Berlin and Prague and I can highly recommend a stop in the city itself and in the national park one hour south close to the border with the Czech Republic. You can easily get there by taking the train.

2) Watch were you are going in Prague. It is probably the city in Europe where you are most likely robbed and beaten up after a night at a club. Be very careful after dark.

3) Consider visiting Florence. If you love art I would even recommend that you skip Rome and spend the time you planned for Rome in Florence.

4) Look at night trains before you take a flight. Saves you considerable time if you travel in your sleep.

5) some useful links:

www.skyscanner.net (budget flight search engine)
www.eurolines.com (bus all over Europe, check out their bus pass)
http://reiseauskunft.bahn.de/bin/query.exe/en (train schedule all over Europe)
www.jizdenka.cz (approx. train prices)

And finally:

When staying in Paris, I can highly recommend you to rent a flat -snip-. It will be cheaper than the hotel because you can make your meals in the apartment instead of the restaurant and the rent is a good price.
Have a nice stay in Europe

Florence, Italy at Easter is amazing. Be sure to be at il Duomo by 9am to secure a good spot to view the "exploding cart."
