At 42, I don't know of any hostel that would turn you away.... I knew an 80 year old guy who was hostelling through South America. He didn't report any troubles.
Depends on the kind of guy you are, of course, but I would think you'd be a little ostracized by the younger set, off to drink beer and frolick and find some of that young sex. Someone will come on and say "You're only as old as you feel" but that ain't the way in the hostel, for the most part.
But as far as giving you a bed, I would think most hostels would do it without a qualm. In Buenos Aires, try the Nomad in San Telmo...Not Nomad II which was a shithole, but the first one.
