5 months is plenty of time to see all of NZ - I'm a Kiwi, so if you want advise on any specific places, let me know Queenstown is a good place to start as a traveller, you should find it relatively easy to pick up work, theres a couple of job agencies there to help you out. It will be very simple work though, most likely - early vineyard prep, scooping icecream, kitchenhand etc. If you have specific skills though they may be able to place you within your field. I think hostels would be your best accommodation option - if you're going to be moving around a lot, travelling up the country, anything else would be too committed. You'll manage to make lots of friends in the hostels at least Check out Pinewood Lodge in Queenstown, it has some space more geared towards long-term stayers.
