Bangkok to Angkor Wat...any tips?

hello

It's now possible to get between Bangkok and Siem Reap by bus much quicker and easier than it used to be, thanks to the new road. Have a look at thread.

Aaron,
is a great resource for all things Cambodian. Just follow the instructions on how to do it on your own. With the new road, it will be much faster than past years.

hey arron.....
ironically i have the same plan...
i've done a lil bit research.. there are good deals available to travel by air from Bangkok to Siem Reap or Phnom Penh
i'll b doing this trip in April 1st week.
what i'm planning is to travel by air from BKK to REP or PNH.

when r u planning to go there? if our dates are coinciding, then might as well catch up in Cambodia..

All I find is BKK Air: BKK-REP and that is not a bargain. Air Asia flies BKK-PNH at a decent price, but does not go to REP. Please post your 'good deal' BKK-REP.

Your sacrifiing a day of your life that you will never get back!

There are firms around the old Railway station which do daily trips to Siem Reap leaving around 7am. You will need to book at least 1 day before though - just jump on the rail and head there.

The journey can take up to 12 hours. It may be cheap but its painful. Its not a coach, its normally a mini-van and theres little legroom. Things to know, make sure you have a passport sized photograph as this is needed at the border, they will probably overcharge you for the visa and give you a three month one, and they deposit you at a transit station after you've crossed telling you to change money here - dont do it as its a con and completely untrue; everywhere accepts dollars. Apparently they have now improved the road from the border to Siem Reap, but its still a damn long journey taking between 4 and 6 hours.

If you can afford it, fly. Air Asia, Bangkok Airways and Thair Airways all fly BKK to Phnom Penh with flight time of about 1 hour. You can then get regional airways to Siem Reap taking about 30 minutes at about $60 or take a coach (4 hours) at about $5 from the dozens of companies which do these journeys - much more comfortably than the bus you will get from Bangkok as these are proper coaches.

Also recommend you only consider doing 1 day at the temples - its easy to get templed out and not respect the marvels. Speaking of respect, dont do the sundowner on the temples. Its a bloody circus with everybody crawling all over the temple for the best view of the sun going down. Its horrible to witness 700 year old temples being desicrated by people only interested in getting that shot for their facebook page.

And when you get there, try the local way of eating. Go to 4faces bar and ask directions for the Khmer BBQ place. All you can eat for $3. You can also browse the war photos whilst your there making your enquiries.
