I travelled with Continental airlines who had a restriction on the straps etc so I had to get the backpack completely covered over in plastic but there was a machine at the airport that did this for a small fee. I was in Peru at the time so was a long haul flight. Maybe it's best to check with the airline and they can advise on their specifications.
First I've heard of that one. I've checked a pack with straps hanging out. Now, however, I did go out and buy a "travel pack" that allows the straps to be stowed behind a panel. I like to carry on my pack anyway, and I use a medium size of 40L and it works fine.
The airlines seem to be getting more picky on this one. Ive had quite a few flights where they made me tie straps down more. And i've seen others with packs being asked to have them wrapped in plastic. I think they have probably had problems with the straps catching in conveyor belts and such and then being in a dispute with irate customers that got their backpacks torn up.
I now have a rain cover for my pack. Which is good to have anyway to keep dirt, rain and unwanted hands out of the pack and straps in.
First time I hear this issue, I saw dozens of people checking in their backpacks with loose straps.
But for the protection of my backpack, I always use a flightbag to put my backpack in.
Another advantage is I can close this flightbag with a lock, so my stuff is pretty secure during flights and busrides.

I think we are going to ring the airlines (once all the ash drama goes) and see what they say. I found a back pack I really like but it does not have a cover etc...
Is the wrapping available at all airports? The airports we will be flying out of are:
Heathrow - Bangkok
Bangkok - Sydney
Sydney - Christchurch
Auckland - Santiago
Buenos Aires - Heathrow

Since most airports have their own websites, I would check the ones you're using. I've only seen the wrapping machines at Asian airports.
I think it's a bit hit-and-miss with that rule about rucksack straps. I've been pulled up on it only twice in all the times I've boarded my pack and have been told to tidy up the straps once or twice also, but most times if it's relatively neatly packed so that the straps won't get caught in the machine rollers you should be ok.
