Best Cell Phone Option?

Hey guys. I'm going to be backpacking across Europe for 6 months and therefore would like to have some sort of cell phone while I'm over there. I'm not concerned with actually making phone calls as I'm not one to talk on the phone. My main concern is texting. I'm used to having an unlimited texting plan and being at least 7 hours ahead of my friends and family it's easier for me to text them back and forth. I was wondering if anyone could tell me what would be the best option for my particular needs. Buy a phone over there? Some prepaid phone with cheap text rates? Get a phone with a plan from Canada that will work in Europe? *Remembering I don't plan on phoning often*

If you're going to be backpacking across all of Europe, that means being in multiple countries for shorter periods, which pretty much makes having a local sim card a bad deal. You'd need to get a sim card that works in multiple countries, like one of the ones (that's a partner of ours, there are of course others that have similar options!). You could take your phone from back home with you, but only if it's a GSM based phone that uses a sim card (and doesn't have an operator's lock on it)? Otherwise you can pick up cheap phones just about anywhere in Europe these days
