Q.1: The cost for a 15 day visa is $32US and you need exact money. Where do I exchange Aust. $ for kip? Chiang Khong/Huay Xai or should I take US$ with me?
Q.2: What is a fair price for tuk tuk/moto ride out to the bus station from Huay Xai?
Q3: I have read that from Huay Xai you can catch a bus around 9.30am to Luang Nam Tha (5-6hrs). Have to stay overnight? Next morning catch the 8.30am through service to Vientiane getting off at Pak Mong. From Pak Mong negotiate a price for a seat on a minibus/songthaew (which doesn't depart until there are sufficient numbers) or minibus/songthaew originating from Luang Prabang or Udomsai to travel to Nong Khiaw. Stay overnight in Nong Khiaw. Next morning negotiate a price on a boat to Muang Ngoi (1hr) which departs around 11am. Stay overnight in Muang Ngoi. Next morning negotiate a price on a boat (8hrs) to Luang Prabang which doesn't leave until there are sufficient numbers.
Q. Would appreciate any updated info/advice on travel (bus/minibus/truck) options and approx. (fair) costs between Pak Mong/Nong Khaiw/Muang Hgoi. After crossing the border from Chiang Khong my interest only lies with Nong Khwai and Muang Ngoi and then travelling to Luang Prabang. I'm thinking (as a solo traveller) and being in 'low season' (August?) that if I were to be subjecting myself to high prices from local operators to get from point A to point B I may decide to give it a miss and just take the 2 day slow boat from Huay Xai to Luang Prabang.
