Western Europe 14 days itenerary

I'm doing my electives in Netherlands for 5 weeks (fr 16th Aug) and I have 2 weeks (25th sept to 9th oct) to travel around Europe. I'm planning to try see most of western Europe in 14 days if possible (still negotiating for more days for backpacking). Backpacking in a group of 3 girls. And this is a very rough itenerary.

Wow, that's impressive itinerary! Looks tight a little bit there but you might enjoy the journey! I wanna back to Edinburgh!

Impressive? But yikes. I was told in another forum that I can't make it in 14 days unless I rushed through everything. I need to make sure it's feasible.

Yeah, no way this is doable. You'll have the "if today is Tuesday, then this must be Paris" syndrome. Half those destinations would be just doable, but not more. The main thing you didn't take into account is travel time. When you're making your next itinerary, calculate a full travel day between each destination. Sometimes travel will take less time, and you'll get to enjoy an extra afternoon somewhere, but that's much better than counting on having most of a day to see a place after travelling there, and then having delays, or just being too bloody tired from the umptieth train to enjoy anything for the rest of the day.

Personally I'd drop Italy and the UK from your itinerary and spread those days out over the rest of your destinations. Or drop Germany and the UK, and fly straight to Rome to then make your way back overland.

1-Berlin (doing Germany first because Oktoberfest ends 3rd oct)
1-Rhine valley or Romantic Road (is it too out of the way to start in Berlin)
2-Munich
1-Venice
.

Are those the travel days that you plan to have for those places?

Berlin in one day, it is impossible. And racing to the Rhine Valley the next day, how are you going to do this?

Travelling time by train from Amsterdam to Berlin is 10 hours, from Berlin back to the Rhine Valley it is another 10 hours, from the Rhine Valley to Munich is 6-7 hours.

If you are determined to do this I would recommend that you spend 3-5 days in Berlin, 2-3 days in the Rhine Valley area and 2-3 days in Munich. Accounting for travelling time I would then say that you need approx. 3 days for travelling, so that for all German destinations you are looking at at least 10-14 days in Germany alone.

Berlin is actually pretty far from Munich by train. I assume when you say Romantic Road you want to see the castles in Hohenschwangau? That's a whole day excursion in and of itself, so you may want to skip Berlin all together and spend more time in Munich. In my opinion, Munich has more (and prettier) sights to see. (But Berlin is, of course, still interesting historically!)

thanks for feedback all of you. Yes im revising my itenerary. I was told to focus on2-3 countries for the 2 weeks i have rather than rushing around. Any idea how to decide where to go for a first timer? You want to see everything but in the end you have to make practical decisions. Sigh.

oh yeah i was planning to see the oktoberfest in munich and maybe explore bavaria. Then thought of going to romantic road to yeah see the castles. I dont know, what else do you recommend in germany for a first timer? Im the type who's adventurous, loves culture, food, scenery, people, history, art, music, photography. Thats practically everything i guess. Im not going there to party though. So dont bother bout night clubs and stuff. Oh, and we're looking for cheap and free yet fun stuff.

For a first timer I usually recommend Berlin (it is such a vibrant city) and the Rhine area. Many people like Bavaria, but I am not so hot on this part of Germany.

Coming from the Netherlands I would recommend visiting Cologne, the Rhine Valley, maybe Rothenburg ob der Tauber.

If you are not that big on party I recommend skipping Munich and the Octoberfest (just too many rowdy drunks) and going to Canstatter Wasen in Stuttgart instead. Less overrun with touristst with a more local feel.

Munich is rather boring (aside from Octoberfest), Salzburg (Austria) is a must, many go to Heidelberg for 1-2 days because it is close to FRA airport, ...

I initially decided on France and Italy in 14 days.

And then my dad told me my budget is malaysian ringgit 5000 - which converts to 1207 euro. I don't think it would be quite enough. I need it to last for the 5 weeks we'll be in Holland.

I have other friends among my group of 5 which have limited budgets as well.

Was considering a Contiki tour or any other cheaper tour packages - any suggestions?

I think this is all possible, as long as you take one-way budget flights and don't travel by road. There are flights from and to all the destinations you mention.... Go for it ! !
