PLEASE HELP! EUROPE 4 WEEKS

My husband and I are planning a 4 week europe trip in May 2011.
We are planning to fly from Australia to London

It's feasible, but just barely. For me, this would be too much for just four weeks.

Much depends on your mode of transport. Will you be taking trains/busses, or planes? I wouldn't recommend the latter for reasons of cost (not to mention pollution), but by road these destinations are fairly far apart. What you could do, is the following:

  • London (2 days) - Eurostar to
  • Paris (3 days) - night train to
  • Barcelona (3 days) - flight to
  • Pisa (1 days) - train to
  • Rome (3 days) - train to
  • Florence (2 days) - train to
  • Venice (2 days) - night train to
  • Prague (3 days) - train to
  • Berlin (3 days) - train to
  • Amsterdam (3 days)

All in all, I'd say you spend too little time in each of your italian destinations, so I'd cut out one more (my choice would be Florence, which deserves a much longer stay anyway).

Does this help?

In general: try to rent a car and fit in some nature/landscape/parks. A month in cities, even in Europe, is rather boring in my opinion. Even big culture/city lovers I know regret not spending some more time outside of cities.

You are trying to pack too much into too short a time. You are either going to be travelling, sight-seeing or asleep. You are going to see hardly anything of London in a few days and nothing outside of London. Paris and Rome deserve a fair bit of time too. With so little time, 1 full day is enough for Venice and Prague. Amsterdam and Berlin 2 days. Pisa the things worth seeing are together so not many hours. Florence can be done in a day. Barcelona 2-3 days.

As time is short, consider flying. May is off peak and Europe has a lot of cheap airlines you can book online (but travelling to and from airports will add to time).

You can buy tickets online for Pisa, Uffizi gallery in Florence, Vatican, etc. You will not have time to spend in long queues. Having ready accommodation and travel tickets would help.

If I had to make cuts, I would cut out Amsterdam and Barcelona.

Everyone going to Europe the first time does the same thing (including myself) - just trying to squeeze as much as possible into the trip. For me, train travel in Europe is a must - just love the intrigue of train travel that air travel just doesn't match. Paris is my town - fantastic! Amsterdam is also amazing and deserves more time to explore and just chill out in. Florence didn't cut it for me, sorry, but Rome was incredible! I suggest cutting out your E. European stops and seeing W. Europe by train - don't even use a schedule - just come and go as you please, and when time is up, just take Eurostar or the ferry back to merry old London LHR.

THANK YOU everyone for your advice!!!! you have been very helpful
