Hey there all!
Anyone know a good way to get from Vilnius to Olsztyn.
According to Bahn.de im getting a 20 hour train ride.
Is bus the only option here?
Your best way to do this trip is..
Vilnius to Warszawa Centr. on the overnight express and change in Warszawa for Olsztyn.
Normally, I would suggest getting two domestic services, one in Lithuania and another in Poland. But honestly, the fare difference will be so small and it means messing about on different trains half way through the night.
The train leaves Vilnius at 22:30 and gets to Warszawa at 05:00. From there, choose either buses or trains.
By the way, the fare from Vilnius to Warszawa is no more than €25 and there's no need to book a ticket or seat in advance.
I can see what Bahn.de is coming up with, there is a very slow service that involves going all round the houses. It works, but like you say - it takes a long time. Go for the overnighter and change in Warszawa. It's bound to be more expensive than the 20 hour journey, but quite honestly - from start to finish for under €35 or so, it's worth it.

I did consider the Warsaw detour but from past experiences, the connections from Warsaw to Olsztyn are awful, And Im such short on time - heading to the battle of Grunewald the next day, that I need to get to Olsztyn in good time. The bus looks best, leaving Viln at 22:00 - 5AM Olsztyn.
Good thing is this trip is cheap but the roads around the Mazurian (sp) lakes are gna kill me, ill need alot of travel pills!
The trains from Warszawa to Olsztyn are not that bad anymore. The quickest service is direct and takes under 4 hours.
I agree with your statement about the roads near to the lakes. Have you ever seen the equivalent in Bulgaria? Its scary stuff.
hmm ill look into it then. Might not be a bad idea. Id prefer the train over bus anytime.
And yeah I know about Bulgaria, lived in Valiko Tarnova and took alot of roads there. But the worst is the West of Scotland, I get sick everytime around Loch Lomond
