Hubby and I are going to Vancouver in October and we are looking at staying at the Hilton Vancouver Metrotown Hotel, does anyone know what it is like to stay at? I would love some comments from people that have stayed there if possible. We were going to stay in a hotel downtown but then we saw too many reviews mentioning the homeless people hassling the guests and decided against that.
I live in Vancouver, and you are fine staying at the Hilton in Metrotown, or ANY Hilton.
The giant mall you are wondering about is indeed a GIANT mall. It's like five malls put together. I personally would never go there. It's just far to "mally" and malls suck unusually large phallus. Also, outside the mall there is nothing worthwhile (except for a good Judo club, if you like Judo)
The reports you read of harassing panhandlers is GARBAGE! And, seriously, if you can't say NO! to a panhandler, then WHERE are you living in Oz, again?
Vancouver actually has a law PROHIBITING aggressive panhandlers, which the local businesses make sure the constabulary enforce. On the other hand, Metrotown Station, The Skytrain station in question, HAS been known to be a location of late night muggings....And there is seriously nothing worthwhile in Burnaby, which is where that is.
But, it's a Hilton.....It's the same as every other Hilton. Good and safe.
Have a good trip

Thanks for that Piecar. The mall is right up our alley because even Vancouver is still cheaper shoppingwise compared to Perth here in Oz. We are going to be bringing suitcases full of stuff for our family in Trail and then filling up another suitcase with clothes for ourselves that we are going to buy when we get to Vancouver.
We aren't planning to be out late at night really but if we will be coming back to the hotel after dark we were thinking along the lines of a taxi. The skytrain seems like a great idea during the daylight hours though. I haven't had any problems with beggers anywhere near where I live in Perth and I don't want to have to deal with it overseas if I can help it. I think it would be embarassing for all involved.
Well, Daviesgang, you're right about that. The Skytrain is a great thing...And you get to see some interesting stuff during the day. If it strikes your fancy, take the Skytrain two stops EAST and keep your eyes peeled out the North windows. You'll pass right over the "Smallville" soundstage and will be able to see all their outdoor sets, and maybe even Clark Kent himself, shooting a scene.
I flew my parents into Vancouver a few years ago. I had to go to work (on Smallville, incidentally) and left them to their own devices for a day....The first place they went was to Metrotown to shop. I guess it's well known or something.
Have a great trip.
