It is quite difficult to give you an idea of money as it really depends on the countries you plan to visit...the exchange rate your country offers, and so many other things such as what activities you want to do, what kind of accommodation you use etc. A year is a long time to travel with out working.
You are best to decide on where you want to go....then check the cost of flights and other transport....train, bus etc. There are ways of co ordinating flights, and bus and train passes usually give you a cheaper way to get around than paying separately for each leg of your travel.
I assume you plan to stay in backpackers which would be the cheapest.....also look at cheap hotels if you are in cheaper countries such as some South East Asia.
If you are away a year you will not want to book the whole year perhaps... but you will always need a ticket to show you are leaving a country! So you cold do a certain amount by having stopovers on a long flight.There are round the world tickets. Or if you plan to go to Europe for example you could have a return ticket to one destrination such as Paris and then travel by land to see much of it. Train or bus or both.

I really want to travel through Africa, Asia and Australia, for about a year like I said, so I can spend 3-4 months in each continent. I've found a tour of Africa on the internet that is about 60 days, through Botswana, Kenya, Namibia, Malawi, South Africa, Tanzania, Uganda and Zambia. I wasn't sure if this would be the best way to go, as a tour, or whether it would work out better for me to organise something myself?
I would love to learn to scuba dive. I was planning on getting my licence before I go to Egypt in January, but I'm really liking the idea of learning in the Great Barrier Reef, although I''m really not sure how much it would cost.
And I would like to work as I go, I just want to make sure I have enough money saved so that it isn't mandatory for me to do so, or I can't get/find work. On that note, I was wondering how easy it is to get working visa's and if I will need them in every country I want to visit? I'm from England, I'm not sure if it's different depending on where you are from.

People travel on all sorts of budgets, some on virtually nothing. It all depends on where you are going and how you spend your time. Skipping alcohol will make your money last a lot longer, but then maybe that's too much to give up I know I enjoy a cold beer on a warm travelling day.
Of the places you mention, Australia will most likely be the one costing you a lot of money. The Australian dollar is very strong at the moment, so your money won't go nearly as far as it might have in the past here. On the other hand, as you're from the UK, you can probably get a working holiday visa to allow you to work while you're here. That can obviously make it all last a lot longer.
If you don't want to work though - keep your visit to Australia short, spend lots of time in south east Asia, book cheap flights through Air Asia or travel overland, stay in dorm beds, don't party too much. If you stick to something like that, you'll probably find your money goes pretty far. Though I'm not game to say how far
Regarding flights - definitely book them before going to the airport. The cheapest fares are usually if you book well in advance. Can easily be booked online. Also, the less moving around you do, the less your expenses will be too. Saves on all those train / plain / bus / boat fares. Just because you're travelling, doesn't mean you always have to be on the move
And always be sure to check on visa restrictions for the countries you are visiting.

I wish I could afford £30, 000! I am only 20 and don't have a brilliant job. I'm not planning on going around the world, just to Africa, Australia and SE Asia. I was thinking about saving £10-12,000? And then working in Australia to earn the next leg of my trip. Do you not think that would be any where near enough?
