New York, LA, Vegas and San Fran in 3weeks?

Hi, I start my RTW trip on Nov 1st and spend the first 21 days in north america. I need advice on whether my following plan is feasable/realistic in terms of timescales: fly into New York spend 5nights, fly to LA spend 3nights, rent car + drive 6hrs to Vegas spend 4 nights, drive back to LA spend 1 night, 7.5hr shuttle bus to SF spend 5/6 nights, shuttle back to LA spend 1 night, then we fly to fiji. we would really like to see all these places and the order is important as flights are booked. any advice?

The timetable is feasible, however, two nights in Las Vegas is more than enough for most people.

Driving between Los Angeles and Las Vegas is okay, but I'd rather take a one hour flight than drive Interstate 15. Do try to avoid traveling to Nevada on Friday evenings and returning on Sundays, traffic is incredible with Californians returning.

As far as the LA-SF shuttle bus, have you considered flying that leg instead? There is a lot of flights between LAX and SFO and 1 hr 15 min in the air is easier than all day on a bus.

Sounds like a fun trip. Best of luck and enjoy.

You need to rethink the whole Calif part. You don't want any 7.5 hr bus ride from hell (anything on I-5 is just that). I would rent a car for your entire stay in LA, drive to Vegas, and continue on to SF by car too, and then fly back to LA.

If you are from the UK or AU and fear driving on the wrong side of the road for the first time, then I would start that trip in SF. As I've said at least twice before on TP, LA is no place to learn how to drive on the opposite side since the average freeway speed is close to 80mph (at least in the SF Bay Area that speed is a little more moderate 70mph).

thanks for the tips, I am now thinking of maybe getting a return flight from LA to SF instead of that dreaded shuttle bus haha. I was trying to do it as cheap as possible, but for the extra £30 or so, its worth avoiding the hassle of the bus I suppose. The only difference is, the shuttle is a door to door service from and to the hostels I will be staying in, so I must take into account the neccessary costs of airport transfers with the flight option. decisions to make
Are 'southwest airlines' a good cheap option? i have looked at their website and it seems one of the cheaper ones.
I still intend to drive to Las Vegas and back from LA in a rental car, leaving on a tuesday and returning on a saturday.

Money is a major issue for us to be honest as we are on a backpacker budget, so we must make some compromises on perhaps; comfort/travelling times, in order to make our money stretch as far as possible.

cheers for your help
