some questions

right off to oz in september 15th arriving in brisbane and was just wondering before we do anything, shall we visit the local bank asap and open an account and have our money transfered form our british account into our aussie one?
will they eb able to guide me through this?
how long would this take to transfer over?

Hi Keraldo,

I'm here to answer your questions as accurately as possible. However, all these answers depend on the nature of your visit - are you migrating? I can see you're planning on working. What kind of places do you plan to stay? Hotel, hostel, renting, staying with friends? What sort of stuff are you looking to do? Diving, Hiking? Things like that.

You can apply for bank accounts online with NAB as long as you are migrating. Read through for more information. I would say yes, it's an excellent idea to have an account set up if you are staying for any kind of prolonged vacation, even if it's just a couple of months. Even if you aren't eligible to transfer online, coming in first thing will mean you will have local access to your funds within 5 working days, pending authentication of your identity. I've personally never seen it become a problem, given you have a valid passport.

My best travel advice is to always have multiple ways to access your money - so yes, take your card, and yes, take some cash. That 2000 Euro is worth nearly $3000 AUD, and I would recommend having $100 AUD each when you land. There are no fees/taxes to speak of, but that will get you a taxi, food, and handle any unexpected expense between the airport and the bank.

Whether or not $3000 AUD is a suitable amount depends entirely on the lifestyle you want to lead. I don't know your accommodation needs, or what sort of activities you plan to do... An average hotel can easily be $100 per night. A meal will be at least $10. A beer can be $5-12 depending on the pub. With that sort of budgeting you are looking at an average of $140 per day (accommodation, 3 meals and 2 drinks per day) meaning your $3000 will be gone in 3 weeks.

You can stretch it out to way less time than that, or considerably more. I hope this answers some of your questions, and at this stage it's up to you to decide what sort of lifestyle you want in order to make the most of your funds.

Cheers,
Leon
