Best Hostels to meet people in Bangkok

Going to try and get to Thailand in Feb/March 2011 for several weeks. Going on my own ( 34 Yr Old Male ) and want to know where the best place to start is ( literally ) once I arrive in Bangkok?
Want to find a busy hostel straight away so I can hook up with other travellers.

Head to the Khao San Road and Soi Rambuttri areas - both have lots of budget accommodation, backpacker cafes and bars where you should be able to hook up with other travellers easily enough. They are within walking distance of each other; Soi Rambuttri is a little quiter and more pleasant (in my opinion) than Khao San Road.

hey, i'm going to bkk by Nov, staying at this cool hostel at Khao San =)

I recommend Hi Udee hostel in Bangkok. It is a good place to stay as it provides good facilities at nominal costs. Travelers are provided free lockers, breakfast, WIFI, linen and towel, access to guide books, magazines and maps and much more.

Khao San Road area does attract a lot of young kids right out of school. If you like being around kids probably younger than you stay there. In Bangkok hostels and small hotels and guest houses are not too far apart in price. If you like sharing showers and toilets with lots of other people go with a hostel. But there are hotels with air, private toilet and shower, TV and maid service in the 600 baht to 800 baht range.

Another area of Bangok that has cheap places to stay at is the Sukhumvit Road, Nana Skytrain area. In this area, besides hotels in all price ranges, you also have malls, street vendors, nightlife, restaurants and best of all the Skytrain. No Skytrain in the Khao San Road area.

The Skytrain can connect you with the subway at Asoke, with the new Rail Link at Phaya Thai and with the Ekamai bus terminal. The subway can take you to the national train station. Also the Skytrain will take you to Patpong, Chatuchak, MBK, Siam area and lots of other areas.
Bangkok Rail Map.

With the new Rail Link up and running it is possible that you can take the Rail Link to the Phaya Thai Stop and from there switch to the Skytrain route and get off at Nana and walk to your hotel or hostel. But there are buses from the airport that will take you to KSR and other areas in the city too. If you arrive at the airport after midnight you may have to take a meter taxi.

Here is a hostel that is in the Sukhumvit Road area. Soi 1 Hostel. If you want to do any cheap dental work this place is real close to Bumrungrad Hospital.

Here is another hostel that is popular with many travelers, the Suk 11 Hostel.

There are some small hotels that don't have fancy websites, often you have to check them out in person and use them at a later date. Some of these places will take a booking without any credit card, just an email request. When you walk around take notice of other places to stay at if you need a change or even a better price or location.

Here is a small hotel group, the Orchid Group, that several small places in Bangkok, all not far from the Nana Skytrain route.

This hotel chain has places in Khao San Road area and Pattaya. Sawasdee hotels.

When you need hotel info always mention a price range to narrow down the suggestions you get.

Good luck.
