We are hoping to take the boat from Phnom Phen to Siem Reap this December. Any suggestions or advice would be greatly appreicated. We are a very active older couple who love adventure.
I have been on this boat 3 times. Road once. Back in the 90s the road was in such bad shape it was a poor option. Now the road is faster and cheaper than the boat. But, the boat is great for photos and to see the Tonle Sap. Photos in my gallery: Cambodia, page 5. Check around for the best price in PP. The fare is a ripoff, dual pricing at its worst. Negotiate.
I guess you're better off with the boat ride between Siem Reap and Battambang. During this trip you'll sail smaller canals, which in my opinion is more rewarding than the Tonle Sap lake, which is so huge it sometimes looks like a sea...
Was in Cambodia last Oct, the road condition is is good.
It takes 8hrs to travel from Siem Reap > Phnom Penh with one stop in between with Mekong Express Coach @ USD 11 (inc a bottle of water, a cookie & a dry pork bun).
The pouring season is ending by this or next week. Yo may expect some low tide in Dec and you may end up more hours in the river than by bus.
Many thans to all of you for your input. We have heard that they really overbook the seats so are thinking we will take the express bus.
Personally I would go for the bus over the boat. The boat was so overcrowded and actually rather boring!
