That's a loaded question because it really depends a lot on how much you'll want to spend on accommodations and food. Food isn't cheap, but you can easily manage on less than $25 a day ($15 if you really aren't picky at all, and aren't self catering), but the food will be more sustenance than experience.
Visiting attractions in the US tends to be a bit pricy, as museums often run $15-25 for admission, same goes for visiting places like the Empire State Building's observation deck, botanical gardens, etc.
As to flights here, airlines run sales all the time, but as you might expect flying from big city to big city isn't usually terribly cheap. That said you should be able to get a RT ticket for about $150-200. Doing it open jawed (city a to city b to city c) is usually much more expensive.
Check out websites like kayak, Jetblue, and others for the best in florida fares.
Realistically I'd plan on a minimum budget of $50 per day, per person, not including accommodations or intercity travel, on days you are sightseeing and going to attractions, maybe cut that in half - if you are just trekking the cities and looking around without visiting many places or you plan well to hit up the free and cheap ones.
Of course that also depends on how long you plan to stay in each place, but I think trying it on less money than that is probably hard.
Thank you for that! I was planning on taking just over $1000 for about 3 weeks for spending money and food and I have checked hostel prices in all areas and done my maths for that.

Well you can find good deals on flights, but you need to be alert for them and catch them at the right time. Depending on your time of year and flexibility I do think you'd be able to find flights for $150 or less, but it might mean lots of connections and you'd probably have to fly back to the same city you came out of.
Certainly I'm happy to help you with advice and suggestions for the New York leg of your trip and recommend some cheap and good eats, things to visit and and even give you a couple of walking tours I've been working on. If you like to walk it;s an amazing city.

That is a loaded question. My only advice is for NYC - if you insist on staying in a hostel, make sure it has lots of good references - opt for one that might be in a good part of Brooklyn (Williamsburg, etc) or on the Upper West Side. If it costs a little bit more money but has great recommendations - choose it! The cheaper ones are going to be many bunk beds in a room with little security.
You can find cheap eats in Manhattan in the East Village! For food you could get by on $20 a day easily if you go to the right places. I'm not sure how much hostels are but like most things in NYC, they will probably be pricey.
