Singapore to Bangkok and Beyound....

Me and my girlfriend are landing in Singapore May 6th to travel through SE Asia

Accommodation in Singapore is expensive and most of the island can be done in a few days. Malaysia has lots of nice countryside, the Cameron Highlands, Kuala Lumpur and Penang (the last is my only favourite, though a fairly small island). South Thailand is the beach places, islands and the like. Bangkok is rather hectic and a week is enough for some. You might wish to travel upto Chiang Mai or even Chiang Rai before going east to another country. lots of travel agents in and around Khao San Road and even an AirAsia booking office just along from the Burger King opposite KSR.

You should get visas beforehand where needed. Rooms should not be a great problem in May as many head back home then. June is the start of the rainy season in Asia and when it rains, it is very heavy and can last for hours, with flooding in some areas. But there are dry days, as well as wet days so not as bad as it sounds.

First of all, 2-3 week in Bangkok is way too long...BKK is a nice entertaining city but not for the much time.

I have done pretty much the same trip your are planing.

Singapore - A bit expensive, I've only stayed there for 2 nights. I mainly walked around town to see the bulding and museum . I was staying in Little India which is the backpacker area. Prince Of Wales was the name of my guest house. There was a bar a the first floor and dorm on the second. Good place to meet people.

From Singapore I took the Bus to KL where I've stayed for 5 days or so.]The petronas tower are a must see and I would suggest you go see them by night.

Then I went to Teman Negara, which is one of the oldest rainforrest in the world. I had a trek by myself for 26 km with a night in one of their hide. I've seen elephant, monkeys , a cougar, snakes and some really nice trees. If you do It ..bring a lot of water...I mean a LOT.

From teman negara national park I went to Penang. But didnt really like it.

Then I hitted southern thailand Islands. Phi Phi island is a must see....really nice beaches, great diving, party every night. I strongly reccomand you to stay at The Rock , which is a backpacker dorm...a bit dirty but you'll meet some really nice people over there. Papaya is one of the best restaurant of the island...defenetly a must go.

Then Koh Tao and Koh Phangnan are really nice islands and deserve at least 7 days eachs.

From there I arrived in Bangkok. Khoa Sand road is the place to go. This is where the guesthouses, restaurants, shops, bars and crazyness happens. You'll see. From there take a tuk tuk and go ask to show you the surrounding. Bridge, temples (Wat), MBK

From KhoaSan you can book plenty of one day trip to many places. I would recommend you ayuttaya and katchanabury one.

Then I went to Chang Mai, pretty cool city. From there I booked a trek in the Pai area. 4 days with a little group. Really nice landscape and great memories from there. I was staying at Nice Place guest house 2. Really cheap, hot water, pool, fan and good location.

From Chang Mai I took the Slow Boat trip to get into Laos. Laos is an Amazing country. I did Luang Prabang-Vang Vieng (Tubing) - Vientaine - Pakse - Tadlo - 4000 islands ( must go)

Thats about it...if you have any questions feel free to ask....Sorry for my english, its my second langage.

Thank you both for the replies - some great info there that I will definitely take on board. It's interesting that you both say Singapore is expensive, I will def bear that in mind.

It also sounds like travelling through Singapore up through to Bangkok is pretty easy and accessible which is good news, I really can't wait to begin this adventure now.

Cyberia - where can you apply for the visa's before hand? Online?

Thanks again,
Dan
