Has anyone any advice on the best way to get back to England from New Zealand? We want to fly from Auckland to LA then Amtrak from LA to New York then fly New York to London. The only trouble is: The cost is going through the roof! Buying tickets out of New Zealand to LA is nearly as much as a direct Auckland - Heathrow flight. The Amtrak is fine and a brilliant way to cross the states. Then if we book the flight New York to London out of NZ the price is really high again.
For when are you searching? If I put some random Tuesday in the middle of July into kayak.com (Tuesdays tend to be cheapest), I get one way flights for $1003 (NZD $1229) with stopover in Japan (or $1117 with stopover on Tahiti), or $1126 direct, which seems decent for that time of the year.
Or maybe it's just that yes, the London - Auckland route is really cheap, so flying back a different way will seem expensive in comparison. Anyway, use a meta search engine like kayak, and I don't think your current location should affect prices.
Thanks sander, that's good advice I looked on Kakak for both legs and we are firming things up.
