YHA Melbourne Central is in a really good location - the one that is on Flinders Street. This is right in the middle of the city and very close to train stations and shops.
There are also a few hostels in St Kilda which is a really nice place on the beach - unfortunately its not as great for public transport - you have to catch a tram to the train station (still easy to do!).
Definately go to the Great Ocean Road and Philip Island - both are great to see.
I would love to show you around but will be out of the country when you are here.
