Consider taking a tour bus to orientate yourself. There are a number of companies and you see all the points of interest and can get off and on as you please, visiting the sites and sights.
Last December was horrible weather but it has been unseasonably mild so far this winter so it may not be too bad. However wrap up for the worst.
Try to book accommodation near an Underground station as though crowded (watch your pockets), that is the quickest and easiest way to get around.
those tour buses? the hop on/off buses like the big bus tour company and all that? BIGGEST WASTE OF MONEY. u have to spend so much time waiting for the buses (they were not regular in summer, and i doubt they'll be regular in winter).
u're really better off taking the Underground cos you'll still need transport to get to those bus stops anyway. an unlimited Zone 1-2 day pass which u can buy at any tube station will cost u a maximum of only 8.80 pounds, depending on whether you start your journey before 9.30am in the morning, (and can go to as low as 6.60 pounds if you buy it after 9.30am). the ticket is good for the entire day till the tube stations close at night... u can even take the buses and light rail with these tickets, so it's a really worthwhile spend. as opposed to a big bus ticket which will cost u about 20-25 pounds depending on which company you go with.
london is very navigable on foot. you just need a map. and i'd advise staying in zone 1-2 cos that's where all the nice places u'd want to see are. if u have a smart phone with google maps, you can easily get an 02 prepaid SIM and get data connection for just 10 pounds a month. this includes 300 uk sms, n 500MB of data, great for map navigation. the 10 pounds credit will be in your card and you can use it for calling and international texts.
accommodation can be booked easily and cheaply if you know how and where. i recommend this website - roomorama.com - it's basically a place for homeowners to rent out spare bedrooms and all that.

the other 2 guys who stay there are very nice decent folk, the artsy fartsy sort. hehe and they keep the apartment clean and nice.
let me know if u need more info. i stayed there before and would be happy to help you figure out what's good for you. alternatively if u have a bigger accommodation budget, i can recommend other places for you too! i stayed at a few of these places in london, and i've looked thru the listings many many times to find places that are convenient for me for each trip.
i think u definitely need to be prepared for a cold winter, the weather's been sort of crazy and u never know what happens. it'll be fun though! bring rainboots or wellies - i heard london in winter is quite icky cos of the snow, rain and generally it's just gonna be wet and mushy. i've not been there during winter, but a sturdy umbrella and/or raincoat would be very useful too i think.

Christmas in London is really wonderful. You can discover London during the most wonderful time of the year, from the beautiful lights and decorations to the traditions of Christmas.

Lebara or Lyca mobile have the best rates even if you're calling abroad. DO NOT by O2, Three, Orange etc. - they charge three times as much.
Those that I mentioned can be bought anywhere really. You can check at their websites and even arrange delivery to your hotel. They're really cool guys.
