hi,
when i was looking into booking my tickets, the travel agents told me that for a return ticket, some airlines will only let you book a return up to a certain date (eg 6 months) but some allow a free change of date for when they release the later dates.
Also some, if not most, allow one free stopover, for up to a month i think
try getting in contact with a travel agents, the least they can give you is some free advice
Hope this helps
If you book your flight through STA (like I did) you can buy a multiflex pass, its £50, and you can change your flight (either there, or back) up to three times, for free... I booked my return flight through them from Sept and returning in July 2012, but i'm already thinking about changing it, so that pass is deffo going to be useful!
And you're right, its nice to have lee-way!!

hi, i booked with emirates and i had to book my return for september 2012, i then rang them up and stated my booking details and they put a note next to my booking that i will be changing my flights for a return in 2013 and there isnt any extra charge! x
