Hey
I am stopping over in singapore for 3 days at the beginning of Feb before I head onto Australia. I was just wondering if anyone had any advice on places to visit while I am there? Maybe any hidden beauty spots that people have discovered!
I am staying in ChinaTown but will obviously happily travel around - I am not sure how expensive it is in Singapore does anyone have any ideas?
Thanks for any advice you can give me!!
Jenny
Hi Jenny,
I spent 3 days in Singapore when on my way to Australia back in 2005 - Here is my two cents worth:-
1) Jurong night safari - a must do IMO for the sheer amount of animals that they have there.
2) Sentosa Island - http://www.sentosa.com.sg/en/ Theres quite a bit of stuff to see there so spend a whole day.
3) The famous "Raffles" hotel for a "singapore sling" http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Singapore_Sling
4) Sim Lim Square - Ideal if your in the market for any new electronic device.
5) Orchard Road - If you're into shopping you will find many malls, cafe's, restaurants etc.
6) Boat Quay - There are waterside restaurants and a few bars here - worth a visit.
Hope this helps - BTW yeah it is more expensive, pretty much like any western city - but I don't think I visited anywhere that is as clean as SP - the metro system runs like clockwork and nothing ever seems to run late.
Have fun
Matt
Hi Matt
Thank You for your advice I really appreciate it - now have a much better idea of some places that I may visit!
The safari sounds brilliant and I am personally very excited about Orchard Road as I do love shopping so think it will be amazing.
Orchard Road is just a number of large malls full of expensive shops widely spread out along it. There are a fair number of other malls on the island as well as shopping areas and markets which are much better.
The metro makes getting around easy as buses can take a long time to do similar journeys.
hello, if youre in sg and wanna have some info/drink or whatsoever. hit me up!
Hi Jenny,
The average prices in Singapore are comparable to the developed countries'.
However, public transport is relative cheaper. Also, taxi fares are not too bad.
You can always find very cheap food in hawker centers (one dish: 1-2 GBP) or in food courts or at roadside restaurants (2-4 GBP).
On the other side, drinking in a nice bar and clubbing are very expensive - count at least double of what you'd pay in London.
Some hostels offer free tours guided by young locals, which is a great way to discover the city and learn a lot about the life in Singapore.
You can find world-class shopping malls everywhere in town, as well as cheap chinese markets.
The airport itself is tourist destination. Many Singaporeans live for the airport hours earlier before their scheduled flight just to enjoy the facilities there.
Make sure you follow all rules on streets and public places to avoid fines. For example: you are not allowed to drink anything on public transport.
Beside that, Singapore is indeed a fine country...
Hi Jenny,
let me correct matt's post above.. there are 3 animal parks here in Singapore, Jurong Bird Park located in the west side of the island, and Singapore Zoo and Night Safari which are both located in the central part of the island. I would recommend the Bird Park and maybe the Night Safari..
In Sentosa, definitely try the Luge and catch the Songs of the Sea.. Universal Studios Singapore is also located on Sentosa Island.
Marina Bay area is surrounded by Singapore's iconic structures like the Merlion, the Esplanade, and now their newest pride, the Marina Bay Sands...

Further to the above suggestions, Little India and Arab Street are interesting areas to stroll around, and the Botanic gardens are pretty.
I spent a month in Singapore this year as a tourist.
The first week I was there before going up to Thailand.
After a couple of weeks in Thailand and Hong Kong I longed for clean Singapore so ended up booking a flight back there.
The second time I stayed for 3 weeks.
I was surprised with how much there is to do in Singapore, apart from shopping. In spite of the new feel that you get about much of the city there is a lot of history around, if that's your thing.
The History museum in the Nation Museum will give you a good general intro to the country.
For more history stuff you could check out the War Cemetery in Krangi; the World War II prison chapel in Changi; the Battle Box, a World War II fort in central Singapore.
The free laser show in front of the Shoppes @ Marina Bay is first class and well worth checking out, better than Hong Kong imo.
A drink in the Sky Bar in the Marina Bay Hotel, (Tower 1 of the hotel) is a nice way to round off the day with great views all round of the night scape.
Orchard Road is mall central with a mall or department store every few feet.
A Singapore sling in the Long Bar, Raffles Hotel is some people's idea of the ideal thing to do in the city. The hotel also has a nice coffee shop on the ground floor if you like.
I found the Botanic Gardens over big and not particularly worth the effort to go there.
The Little India district should definitely be on your list to visit. The area is home to many shops selling all sorts of Indian products from DVD's to music, food to clothing. There's a great Indian restaurant on Dunlop Street near Serangoon Road, if you're interested.
